KAPONGA RIFLE CLUB

HARRISON MEMORIAL SHOOT. The Kaponga Rifle Club fired another series for the Harrison Memorial Cup on Saturday over ranges of 300 yards, 500 yards and 600 yards, ten shots at each, on the range at Rowan. Conditions were not favourable for high scoring and several competitors failed to find the target with some of their shots. Rifleman Barker, whose shooting has been very consistent, was top with 138, his 48 at 600 yards being a fine performance under the boisterous conditions. Detailed scores are:— 300 500 600

TOKO SCHOOL OLD PUPILS. ASSOCIATION’S SUCCESS. There was an attendance of 50 at the Toko school on Monday evening to receive the report on the year’s working of the old pupils’ association. The president, Mr. A. Raynor, said that since the first meeting held in the school on April 23, 1934, when there were 25 present the association had proved itself a very live body, taking a keen interest in everything pertaining to the welfare of the school. At present there were 612 names and addresses on the register of old pupils. Mr. Alex Green, the oldest ex-pupil in the district, was elected patron. Mr. Raynor said he was proud to be the first president of the association. Miss Were had been called on to fill the responsible position of secretary and she had filled that position admirably. The association undoubtedly owed her a debt of gratitude as only those on the executive knew the amount of work she accomplished. On June 13 a reunion tea and dance was held in the hall and was a great success. Former pupils came from all over the North Island and fraternised with their old school fellows. The success was due to the enthusiasm of Miss Were and the committee. During tne year a working bee was held at the school which, under the guidance of Mr. Harper and the school committee, did excellent work in 1 cleaning up the school grounds. To show the association’s appreciation of the good work done at the baths by the school committee an effort was made to assist and at the last meeting the sum of £l7 17s Id was handed over to the school committee for further improvements to the baths. Mr. Raynor concluded by thanking members of the committee and old pupils generally for the loyal support accorded him. Officers elected were: Patron, Mr. A. Green; president, Mr. H. Were; vicepresidents, Messrs. Eric ( Milne and A. Raynor; secretary and treasurer, Miss R Were; auditor, Mr. A. S. Harper; committee, Messrs.. Ernest Milne, R. Burgham, R. Houghton, C. Lawrence, A. S. Harper and E. Jones and Misses J. Murphy, K. Jones and C. Martin. It was decided to commence the year with the annual reunion to be held on May 23 on the same lines as last year. At the monthly meeting of the Toko school committee there were present Messrs. T. T. Murray (chairman), G. Were (secretary), Needhain, Caskey and E. Milne. * The headmaster reported that the roll number was 95 and the average attendance 91.5. A new lawn mower had been received and was doing good work. The man engaged to clean up the grounds and cut the hedges along the front of the school had done a good deal of cleaning up' about the grounds. It was decided to procure a set of four, maps for the school.
