OPUNAKE RED CROSS
THE ANNUAL MEETING HELD. APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS. The annual meeting of the Opunake branch of the Red Cross Society was held on Tuesday evening. The president, Mr. T. P. Hughson, junr., presided. The report stated the year was one of inactivity regarding Red Cross work. The relief work had been carried on as usual, though this had eased somewhat due to the unemployed workers earning more money under the improved system. This had done away with the need for the meat scheme. The sum of £22 7s 8d had been spent on goods and clothing. The money was received from the town board from art unions, and £4 was also received 1 from the Wellington headquarters for relief of soldiers and was spent according to instructions—for unemployed soldiers. The president thanked the secretary and treasurer for their services and_ the committee for its assistance. He paid a compliment to Mrs. Jenkin as chairwoman of the women’s relief committee. He hoped the nursing and first-aid classes would be resumed. The officials appointed were: President, (pro tern), Mrs. R. C. Jenkin; secretary, Miss Cook; treasurer, Miss McCrae; vicepresidents, the local ministers and Mrs. Downey. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £1 2s 3d. On the motion of Messrs. Jenkin and Downey the resignation of Mr. Hughson (who is leaving the district) was accepted with regret. The mover said he was sorry they had to accept the resignation but their loss would be a gain to Rahotu. Lodge Installation.
