LABOUR’S PLANS
CONFERENCE REMITS. REHABILITATING INDUSTRY. Suggestions for the rehabilitation of industry, the 'nationalisation of land, the establishment of a marketing office in New York and the adoption of a policy to provide for the control of all transport by the State are contained in a list of forty-six remits to be submitted to the nineteenth annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Party, which will be held in Wellington in April next, commencing on April 22. Methods and means of carrying out Labour’s plan when returned as the Government will also be discussed. Few of the remits emanate from the Canterbury province, but in matters submitted for' discussion the Kaiapoi branch will move that the party’s policy be amended to provide for the complete nationalisation of land, and also that the party shall advocate a comprehensive system of publicly-owned secondary industries. The Timaru branch will move that a marketing office be opened in New York for the organised marketing of New Zealand produce in the United States. The branch believes that reciprocal trade between New Zealand and the United States should be developed. A remit that the price of materials and implements sold to farmers be controlled will also be moved by the Timaru branch. ADVERTISING N.Z. PRODUCE. The Auckland L-R-C.- and the Glenfield branch will suggest that delegates representing the Labour movement should be sent to England to advertise New Zealand produce by addressing meetings of unions and distributing leaflets to members of al’, unions if the Labour Party is returned to power, and the Sandringham branch (Auckland) will propose that one of the first acts of a Labour Government should be to get into touch with the Co-operative Wholesale Society of Britain with a view to negotiating an agreement for the disposal of the whole of the dairy output of New Zealand.
A number of remits will deal with the problem of rehabilitating industry. The Kaiapoi branch will move: “That as an emergency measure, a Labour Government, on being returned to power shall forthwith, by Order-in-Council, commandeer any land, factories and equipment necessary to put the unem-
ployed back into industry and to produce sufficient goods to ensure a decent standard of living for everyone.” The ,Otago Labour Representation Committee will urge that the Reserve Bank should be made a State institution by the elimination of private shareholders, and that a trading department be established to have direct control over the issue of credit to industrial and agricultural organisations. A suggestion that a committee be appointed to decide upon a schedule of public works to be commenced immediately in the event of the Labour Party being returned as the Government will be made by the Glenfield branch. Several remits propose amendments to the platform adopted at the last conference of the Labour Party. The Mirimar branch will propose that the executive be instructed to formulate a plan for a national health service, and the Waikokopu branch will suggest that the policy be altered to provide for the control of all transport by the State. The Wellington Trades and Labour Council will urge that the party pledge itself to the establishment of clinics where all persons may be medically examined annually free of cost throughout the Dominion.

Richards, M.P., J. Roberts and T. Brindle; vice-president, Mrs. E. R. McCombs, M.P., Mrs. S. E. O. Snow, Messrs. W. E. Barnard, M.Pi, C. H. Chapman, M.P., F. Jones M.P., D. W. Coleman, M.P., A. S. Richards, M.P., J. W. Munro, M.Pi, D> G. Sullivan, M.P., T. Brindle,, P. M. Butler, B. Martin, H. H. McCaw, P. S. Ramsay, J. Reed and J. Roberts.
There are twenty nominations for five seats on the Central Council, and elections will be necessary for six divisional area representatives. Six of these have been returned unopposed, including Mr. G. T. Koller, representing the Timaru branch. For North Canterbury the nominations are: .Miss M. B. Howard, Messrs. G. T. Thurston, J. Mathison, F. M. Robson, and C. Morgan Williams. Mr. James Thorn has been re-elected secretary and treasurer to the party unopposed.
