' PARTIES FROM EAST SIDE. CLIMBS MADE IN MOONLIGHT. Though rain set in on East Egmont ■yesterday afternoon the Stratford mountain house was visited by a large number of people at the week-end, and four parties went to the summit. Two other parties started for the summit late yesterday morning but returned when bad weather began. One climbing party left the plateau at 5 p.m. on Saturday and reached the summit at 7 pun. in time to see the> sun set. The descent was made by moonlight and the house was reached at H P-m. Two other parties climbed by moonlight and were on the peak for the sunrise, and eight members of the Stratford Mountain Club made the ascent during yesteyday* Apart drom the' climbers there was a large number of visitors at the resort at the week-end and a big party made the interesting visit to Curtis Falls and thence via the Manganui Gorge and circular track back to the house. ELTHAM FIRE BRIGADE. RESULTS OF COMPETITIONS. The annual competitions of the Eltham fire brigade were held at the week-end in conjunction with fire prevention week. A demonstration of fire fighting Ml Bridge Street was watched by a large gathering of the public. An imaginary fire was quickly suppressed, and spectators wore impressed, with the efficiency of the brigade. . The brigade was present in' iuu strength under Superintendent H. A. Nuttall, and a high standard of competition work was attained. The Fake Cup was won by Fireman H. Potts in the good time of 39s without penalties. The Gavigan Cup was won by Second Foreman L.
