PLEA TO PARLIAMENT

LYTTELTON WOMAN INJURED. • COMPASSIONATE GRANT ASKED. (By Wire—Parliamentary Reporterr.) Wellington, Last Night. Arising out of a railway accident at Lyttelton on the night of the departure of the Duke of Gloucester for Russell, a petition was presented to Parliament to-day for a compassionate allowance for Mrs. L. G. Marquet, Woolston,. who lost a leg as the result of tire mistiap. The petitioner, her husband, said that as the train came opposite the platform at the Lyttelton wharf the crowd surged forward and Mrs. Marquet and her son were pushed over the edge of the platform and fell under the slowly moving train. The boy was pulled out in time but Mrs. Marquet was not, the wheels of a carriage passing over her legs, one of which had subsequently to.be amputated at the thigh. She was still a hospital patient. The petitioner said ho realised a claim against the Railways Department would not stand, but he felt that in view of the number of people waiting for the train’s accommodation the department should have taken special precautions to prevent accidents. .His wife had received no insurance, and as he was only a working man the expenses of the accident and the cost of the artificial limb were more than he could afford. » ■■■r '.2!...'/
