Cdllifis, at Toronto biit it was recognised that the area to be covered ahd the great distances separating the Western coast of America from eastern States made it impossible for Mr. Collins to maintain effective contact With the trade and tourist interests on the Pacific Slope and the western areas generally. New Zealand had direct and frequehi shipping corihectiOn With western America and, while at the present time trade with the States in sdmfe respects was rendered difficult, action had been taken to bring abdiit negotiations of ifhprbVed. trading relations, in dealing With sUch matters it was of importance that NeW Zealand shoiild have a survCy of possible avenues for the development of biisb ness. Moreover, eveh uhder existing conditions, opportunities tot increased trade no doubt, existed and fe trade cbhimissioner suitably located could be of material assistance. In regard to the adjustment of difficulties Which atesS from time to time between NeW Zealand exporters and trading interest arid State and Federal authorities he could also do good work. . It was worthy of mention that Australia had for several years had at San Francisco a representative. who dealt purely with tourist and publicity affairs and the value of his work was widely recognised. Cabinet accordingly approved of the opening of the office and of the necessary appointment which would be made without delay.
