ATHLETIC TITLES

KEEN COMPETITION TO-MORROW.

WEST COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The best talent in the West Coast (N. 1. Athletic Centre will contest championship honours at Taumata Park, Eltham, to-morrow. Although the fields are not large, the contestants are well matched. It is difficult to forecast the placings. However, the 100 yards is expected to go to Carvell (Wanganui), with Brandon (Wanganui) second and McCready (Taranaki) and Gorringe (Taranaki) close up. S. A. Black (Taranaki) should he a certainty for the 220 yards, with Carvell a good second. The 440 yards should produce a battle royal between Black and Don Evans. Both are in form and it should be a great race. Evans should have little difficulty m winning the 880 yards. The second position is very open, but Boyle (Taranaki) should not be far away. _ • Wanganui holds a strong hand in the mile- and, with a team like Weller, Bourgeois, Bills and Simpson, the prospects-' are that the title will go south. W. Wilson is probably Taranaki’s best, with K. Wells and Gruszning close followers. In the three miles Garrett, the titleholder, will be hard to beat, but Weller, Bills and Ulenberg should give a good account of themselves. The 120 yards hurdles is an open race, but L. A, Newall, the title-holder, should 'win, closely' followed by Mick Darby (Wanganui) and C. P. Rogers (Taranaki). In the 220 yards hurdles Rogers, Newall and Innes should run well, with Darby in a close position. The probable winner is Innes .(New Plymouth), who is a promising young runner over this distance. For the 440 yards hurdles it is difficult to pick anyone to beat Darby and Burgess, and these should have the finish to themselves.

There appears to be an excellent prospect of Miss Noeline Clark (Taranaki) winning the double in the women’s events. Miss E. Reid and Miss M. J. Hall should he well up in the finishes, but the Wanganui girls, who are from the Marton club, may include a surprise packet. The cycle races are an open chance for anyone. The competitors are an even lot, and it is hard to pick the winners' from C. Hawkins (Taranaki), Hansen (Wanganui), Batten (Taranaki) and Anderson (Wanganui). J. C. Bourke Should win the three miles. ■ The walks are a certainty for W. Coleman, the entries in these being few. In the shot E. G. Steore (Wanganui), Fry day (Taranaki), Uniacke (Taranaki) and Bocoek (Taranaki) should perform well, while in the hammer throw Fryday and Doughty are likely to do well. Steere, Lay and Fryday are a trio that should be hard to separate in the discus, while Lay should win the javelin. Clegg and Sullivan are also likely to do well with the javelin.

Ireland, Burt, Newall and Prime (Taranaki) are expected to give good performances in the high jump. Sullivan is looked upon with favour for the pole vault, hop, step and jump and broad jump, with E. Smith, Burt and J. Clapham good opponents in the latter and Cambie and Burt close up in the hop, step and jump.
