NEW PLYMOUTH BOXING
TWO PROFESSIONAL CONTESTS. REVIVAL OF THE SPORT. After a period of inactivity in boxing in North Taranaki, the Taranaki Boxing Association has now arranged a professional boxing tournament to be held in the Opera House, New Plymouth, on Wednesday, March 13, when two professional contests as well as several amateur preliminaries will be staged. The executive has for some time been negotiating with a view to providing a programme that will be worthy of the occasion; and arrangements were completed last night. One star bout will comprise 10 threeminute rounds between J. Jarvis, Eltham, Taranaki champion featherweight, who is popular among followers of the game by reason of the fact that the fights all the time, and P. Hawes, Christchurch, who delighted all followers when he defeated Joe Franklin at New Plymouth some time ago. This will be Jarvis’ first appearance as a professional, and his appearance will be awaited with interest. The other star bout will also be a ten-round professional contest between Johnny McKay, Gisborne, and H. Mudgway, Waihi, both of whom can be depended upon to stage a rugged fight. In addition a team of promising amateurs from Waihi, R. Quinlan, S. McNaughton, J. Warne and G. Mudgway will be making the trip and will be matched against G, Thomas, F. Hutchens, T. Ryan and W. Jones. Mr. L. McAsey was appointed referee and the prices were fixed at a very moderate rate.
There were present at the meeting Messrs J. Garcia (chairman), J. Horlor, E. Jackson, F. Gable, L. E. Sowry, I. Wallace, A. G. Clarke, A, F. Aldie, D. Le Cren Morgan, W. F. Roebuck, Dr. Church and Mr. E. J. Carr (honorary secretary).
