Brixton Garden Party: The annual garden party of the Brixton branch was held in Mrs. E. Hopson’s beautiful grounds last week, was most successful. Visitors were present from the New Plymouth, Bell Block and Lepperton branches and the Waitara and Huirangi institutes. All present admired the well-kept gardens. Competitions were won as follows: Stepping the chain, Mrs. H. Andrews 1; Mrs. Hooper 2,« golf croquet, Miss N. French and Miss Valda Anledson (Bell Block) equal 1; throwing the ping-pong ball, Mr. E. Hopson 1; cake competition, Mrs. Snowball (Lepperton) 1. Bring and buy and icecream stalls did good business.

Eltham: The first meeting of the new year was held last week when there was a good attendance of members. It was decided to send a donation to the community chest. It was also decided to write to unfinancial members requesting payment of subscriptions before the annual meeting. This was necessary owing to the capitation due at headquarters. Mrs. Williams was authorised to send payment for handbags sold on behalf of disabled soldiers and to return those unsold. There was no demonstration. Afternoon tea was served. Manaia: The monthly meeting was held last week, Mrs. Paterson presiding. Three new members were welcomed. A small bring-and-buy was held. A competition for the best plate of shortbread was won by Mrs. Byrne. Mrs. Watts was the judge and the prize was given by Miss Hughes. A presentation was made to baby Gwenyth Brown, the youngest branch member, on the occasion of her first birthday. Sympathy was extended to Mrs. Reardon in the loss of her father. The competition for a box of chocolates was won by Nancy Paterson. It was decided to hold all monthly meetings on the second Tuesday in the month instead of the first Tuesday. Hostesses were Mesdames Mcßreen and McPhillips. Midhirst: The committee of the Midhirst branch met at the home of Mrs. J. Howard bn Friday to finalise arrangements in connection with the baby carnival which is being organised to raise funds for relief. It was decided to have the crowning ceremony early in March, the date to be arranged later. Lepperton: The first meeting of the year of the branch was held on Tuesday, Mrs. H. E. Blyde presiding over a good attendance. Final arrangements were made for the garden party in Mrs. Lepper’s grounds on Thursday. The delegates to the provincial executive reported on the proceedings. Arrangements were made for demonstrations. The hostesses were Mesdames R. Giddy, Gordon Hall and W. Hall. Hunter Road: The first meeting of the year was held last week when Mrs. W. E. Carter presided over a good attendance. Advice was received from Mr. I. J. Bridger, president of the South Taranaki Red Cross Council, of the appointment of a district Red Cross nurse. The president reported four applications for women helpers, two of which had been filled. It was decided to give books and magazines to start a library. It was decided to hold a flag five hundred party next month. Matapu: At the monthly meeting Mrs. Calder presided over a fair attendance. A discussion took place on the question of a garden party and it was arranged to hold a party at Mrs. Sharp’s residence on March 2. Winners of competitions were: Sponge roll, Miss M. Guy 1, Mrs. Bailey 2, Mrs. W. A. Guy 3; article made from flourbag, Miss M. Guy 1, Mrs. W. A. Guy 2, Mrs. Robertson 3. The hostesses were the Misses Robertson and Guy. Inglewood: The branch held its meeting on Wednesday last, when Mrs. Marsh presided over a good attendance. A motion of sympathy was passed to the Misses Trimble in the loss of their brother, the late Mrs. Harold Trimble. Sympathy was also passed to Mrs. Frederickson in her son’s illnness and hopes were expressed for his speedy recovery. Mrs. Marsh announced that the pullets donated by Mr. E. Wright, Windsor Road, were won by Mrs. J. Adamson, Egmont Road. Mrs. Marsh reported upon the business of the provincial meeting at New Plymouth recently. Mesdames Marsh, Grofski, Moir, Winter and Miss McMahon were appointed to arrange a court display at the New Plymouth show. A competition for a best sponge was judged by Mr. Somerton, who awarded the first prize to Mrs. J. Adamson, second to Mrs. Moir and third to Miss Roberts. This concluded the six months’ competition and resulted in Mrs. J. Adamson winning the points prize with 28 points, while Mrs. Bennet was second with 18 points. Mrs. C. J. Harris, provincial president Of North Taranaki, addressed the meeting, her subject being “The power of the farmer’s wife.” Hostesses were Mrs. Grofski, assisted by Mrs. Klenner. A wealth of dahlia blooms was displayed by Mesdames Bennet, Fabish and Marsh.
