GOOD STAKES WILL GET HORSES

from the metropolitan carnivals at Ellerslie and Trentham, one of the most popular racing fixtures staged anywhere in the North Island is the annual meeting of the Te Aroha Jockey Club, which is carded to take place next week, For some years past the officials of the Te Aroha Jockey Club have adopted the enterprising policy of giving lucrative stake-money for all the events carded on the programme, with the result that, at the present time, almost metropolitan racing importance attaches to the Te Aroha carnival. There are few better endowed provincial cups than the Herries Memorial Cup, while this year Te Aroha is also offering a stake of £350 for a champion hack cup.

Racing followers all over the North Island will be interested in the Te Aroha “double," the Herries Memorial Cup and the Waihou open sprint.

If Kiltcwyn and Cuddle meet in the Herries Memorial Cup, the question as to which horse is the next best handicap performer to Vintage may be decided. Kiltowyn, one of the most solid performers to race up North for several seasons, has recently been carrying all before him in important Northern handicaps. Kiltowyn docs not seem to be troubled by heavy imposts, and is certain to come into favour, if he takes his place in the Herries Cup field.

Cuddle will be racing at Dunedin this week, ahd it is asking a lot of any performer to travel from way down South at Dunedin, to up North at Te Aroha,

and then produce top form. However, Cuddle appears to be a hardy mare who thrives on racing, and if she makes the trip to Te Aroha, it can be taken fee granted that she will run well.

Gay Blonde figures in the Waihou Sprint as well as the Herries Memorial Cup, and she seems to be slightly more brilliant over six furlongs and a mile, than over middle-distances. Still, she was not troubled to win the Great Northern Derby at Ellerslie in fairly fast time.

Prince Colossus is now fulfilling all the promise he showed when trained at New Plymouth. “The Prince’s” latest Rotorua Cup victory was an effortless performance, and he now appears to be one of the most reliable horses racing in the North.

If he makes tire trip, Taranaki will have a worthy candidate in Ferseh. With the “boomed” performer, Kelly, Mrs. Walter Graham’s candidate certainly appears to be just about the most likely lightweight. At this stage fancied candidates may be Kiltowyn, Gay Blonde, Cuddle, and Fersen. GAY BLONDE DOMINATES.

Should “the flying filly" be reserved for the Waihou Handicap, Gay Blonde is likely to touch small prices in the quotations. The probable opposition includes several solid sprinters, such. as Puss Moth, Greek Gold, Lucidus, Gay Seton, Star Artist and Coronis, but none of them has a right to be classed in the same category as Gay Blonde. At this stage form seems to favour Gay Blonde, Lucidus, Star Artist, and Coronis.
