CHAMPIONS MAY CLASH
The looked-forward-to meeting of Nightly, and Silver Ring looks like eventuating at Wingatui on Saturday, when the time-honoured Hazlett Memorial classic mile is carded to take place. By beating the leading Australian performers in this year’s Epsom Handicap SR ver Ring proved himself to be a “miler” of the highest class. While racing in Austral Nightly also held his own with the best performers across the Tasman, so that the Riccarton pair should be capable of staging a great duel at Wingatui. Silver Ring’s prospects will be better judged as the result of his outing in the Publicans’ Handicap tomorrow, while considering that he has been lame and troubled in the wind since returning to New Zealand, Nightly -wtos responsible for quite a creditable performance in last week’s Craven Plate at Riccarton. That outing should have worked an improvement in Nightly's condition, and the Night Raid horse may be somewhere near his true form at Dunedin. However, Silver Ring is exceptionally brilliant, and he usually produces his highest form after a short “let up.” /
