KISCH IMPRISONED
LANGUAGE TEST THOUGHT FAIR.
COMMENT BY THE MAGISTRATE.
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10.30 p.m. Sydney, Nov. 28. The Czechoslovakian author, Egon Edwin Kisch, was convicted on a charge of being a prohibited immigrant and was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment pending deportation. The magistrate said the only thing he could consider was a question of law and whether Kisch had failed to comply with what was prescribed by the law. In regard to the language test it appeared that it had been made by a person bom where Gaelic was spoken by a considerable number of people and if that were so the test was a fair one to any person who might be able to speak or write the language. Kisch’s counsel intimated his intention of appealing.
