OLD COLLEGIANS DEFEATED. WANGANUI COLLEGIATE VISIT. In an exciting cricket match, the Wanganui Collegiate School’s second eleven defeated the Old Collegians’ club by two runs at King Edward Park, Hawera, yesterday. The visit was the return for one paid to Wanganui last season by Old Collegians. Old Collegians batted first, and due mainly to Buist, compiled 131, against good bowling by Currie and Meuli. Wanganui’s innings was patchy, but a remarkable stand realising 58 runs, between the Rev. R. B. Austin and Currie, won it the match. The large crowd was considerably excited, and Jackman’s winning hit was greeted with cheers. The school team was entertained at lunch by the Hawera branch of the Wanganui Old Boys’ Association, Mr. S. C. Tonks, president, expressing his pleasure at the visit. Afternon tea was served at Mr. G. H. Ryan’s residence, under the supervision of Mrs. Ryan, assisted by Misses B. Ryan, S. Lovell, J. Hunter, M. Black, E. Buist, K. Coleman, R. ' Pease, M. Hawken and A. Kemp. Mrs. Malone, wife of the president, was unable to be present through illness. Mr. Malone expressed the thanks of the club for the school visit. The umpires were Messrs. G. W. Powdrell and R. West. WEDNESDAY COMPETITION. HAWERA DEFEATS MANAIA. The Manaia Wednesday cricket team suffered its first defeat for the season by Hawera yesterday. The match was played at Hawera and the home side scored 136 to 127 in a two innings game. Batting first, Manaia made 56 (Andrews 20, extras 14; Pritchard seven for 12). Pritchard followed his good bowling by compiling a splendid 43 in Hawera’s innings of 92. Rogers, with 13, was the next best scorer, and Kitt took five wickets for 28. Manaia, .batting again, scored 71 for six wickets declared (Thomas 10 retired, Davies 23, Andrews 21 not out). Pritchard took two for 20 and Worrall two for 16. With 90 minutes left for play, Hawera scored 44 for two wickets, Pritchard and Gray both scoring well with 28 and 13 respectively. GENERAL ITEMS. Power for Patea Beach. A start was made yesterday with the erection of the poles for the distribution of electric power to the beach consumers at Patea. It is expected thatthe current will be available before Christmas. All partions of the borough will then be reticulated. Blacksmith Bankrupt. After a brief examination by the Official Assignee (Mr. C. O. Pratt), John Thomas Henry Colman, bankrupt blacksmith, Hawera, offered to pay 5s in the £ in liquidation of proved debts amounting to £144 6s 3d, sums to be deducted from his wages and paid in monthly amounts of not less than £2. The meeting was held yesterday. This was the second meeting of creditors in bankrupt’s estate, the previous one ing been adjourned sine die some months ago. PORT OF PATEA. November 28: Sailed: m.v. Patrons will be delighted with the introduction of some of the old songs of the darlings of Victorian-Edwardian vaudeville, which include “Don’t Dilly Dally on the Way,” “A Little Bit Off the Top,” “and ‘TH Be Your Sweetheart,” sung by such artists as Lily Morris, Harry Bedford and Jane Carr. The old Magistrate’s Court, with its dock, and its benches, is also faithfully reproduced, and the “defendants,” “witnesses,” “solicitors” and “visiting public” are carefully and expertly dressed in the quaint clothing of the Victorian period. Will Hays, famous stage comedian, makes his debut as “the Magistrate,” ably supported by a big cast, including Marguerite Allan, Angela Baddeley, Jimmy Godden and Claud Allister.
