SACRED RECITAL

VARIED PROGRAMME GIVEN. FINE CONCERT AT HAWERA. A recital of sacred music pleased a large audience at St. Mary’s Church, Hawera, on Tuesday. The programme, which was varied and of high quality, consisted of organ, violin and vocal solos and concerted singing by boys and girls. On the pipe organ Mr. R. Page gave fine interpretations of Bach’s Fugue in D Minor, “Spring Song” (Hollins), “In a Persian Garden” (Ketelby) and Handel’s Concerto in F. Miss W. Mills’ soprano was heard to advantage in three numbers, “How Lovely are Thy Dwellings,” “Consider and Hear Me”, and “Hear Ye Israel.” The Rev. W. A. 800 l sang “Consider the Lilies,” and Mr. Richard Maunder gave the tenor solo, “Where’er You Walk,” and on the violin Handel’s Concerto in A. “The Lost Chord” was sung by Mr. A. Dufresne with a chorus in support. The quartette from Sterndale Bennetts “Woman of Samaria” was sung by Mrs. J. A. Duffill, Mrs. G. A. Burgess and Messrs. Woods and Taylor. The children’s numbers were a feature of the programme. A group of girls directed by Miss G. Chadwick sang two songs. A boys’ choir sang with remarkable sweetness and blend “Good Kang Wenceslas,” “We Three Kings of Orient” and “Land of Hope and Glory.” The first number was unaccompanied and all were under the baton of Mr. Page. Accompaniments were played by Messrs. Page and G. McConnell on the organ. A prayer was offered by Mr. 800 l and a hymn concluded the programme. AMATEUR ATHLETICS. HAWERA CLUB’S MEETING. Members of the Okaiawa Bible class and friends spent a pleasant evening on Monday, when a social was held in the supper room of the hall. Games and competitions were played, and a pingpong tournament was held. The latter was won by Mrs. D. Blair (women) and Mr. F. Tilly ,(men). Songs were given by-Messrs. Sextus and Tilly. Mr. D. Blair was master of ceremonies. Mrs. Lees is the guest of her daughter, Mrs. Innes, New Plymouth. Mr. D. Crawford is visiting Wellington. ■ ■ . Mr. E. Chilvers, who lived at Okaiawa for many years, is staying in the district. Mrs, O. Crawford is visiting Palmerston North. Mrs. Standring and Mrs. Prior, who have been the guests of Mrs. Evetts, have returned to New Plymouth. WELCOME AT PIHAMA. GENERAL AND PERSONAL NEWS. The Pihama hall was comfortably filled on Friday night, the occasion being a welcome home to Mr. and Mrs. L. Whalen after their marriage. Friends were present from Kapuni, Manaia and surrounding districts. Mr. Stewart Gordon played the music and Mr. E. P. Riley was toaster of ceremonies for the dance. Mr. J. Latobie was chairman. Extras were played by Mrs. L. Whalen, W. Evans, and M. Whalen. Mr. R. Ritchie wished Mr. and Mrs.' Whalen happiness for their future, Mr. Whalen replying. The school children are practising for their I annual concert, which will take place next month and promises to be very bright The . trees which surrounded part of the public domain have been cut down and sawn in readiness for the laying of the.all-weather tennis courts which it is the intention of the domain board to put down early next year. Mrs. W. A. Sheat is spending a short holiday at Wellington. MANAIA ANGLICAN BAZAAR. SUCCESSFUL EVENT CONCLUDES. For the evening session of the Anglican church sale of work and bazaar there was a large attendance. Good business was done by all stallholders and at the close of the evening practically all goods were disposed of. The following concert programme was given: Pianoforte duet, Mrs. and Miss Mackie; song, Mr. E. Johnson; humorous vocal duet, “Our Farm,” Mrs. C. W. Abbott and Mrs. M. Row, accompanied by Mr. C. W. Abbott; song, Mr. J. Crompton; pianoforte solo, Miss M. Mackie. . A three-act play entitled “Only a Hoax,” was presented by members of the girls’ guild. The cast was: Old maids, Misses M. Hansen and E. Harrison; nieces, Misses N. Payne and H. Hobday; landlady, Miss M. Gilmont; maid, Miss B. Laursen; Lady Porker, Miss B. Laursen; Miss Trotter, Miss M. Bennett; friends, Misses J. Hansen and B. Hobday. Competitions resulted: Weight guessing, correct weight 1481 b, Mrs. C. Lord (1481 b miniature wedding cake, Mr. B. Borrie; Maori whare, Mr. E. G. Lambert; duchess set, Mrs. Jack Hansen; dinner, Mr. J. A. G. Cosgrove; nightdress, Mrs. F. Rye; , doll, Mr. ‘ Byrne; three-tier cake, Jessie Clague 1, R. HolJ. Meldon 3; seagrass stool, Mrs. A. H. Yarrow; cake, Mrs. E. A. Mitchell. The funeral of the late Mrs. Myra Thatcher took place af Manaia yesterday. A service was conducted at the residence of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Putt, Otakeho, by Rev. C. W. Solomon. The service at the graveside was also conducted by Mr. Solomon. The pallbearers were Messrs A. J. Christie, H. Clarke, G. Clarke, E. Clague, R. Ellicott and H. Corkill. Miss B. Hunger, who has been on an extensive holiday at Melbourne for the centenary celebrations, has returned to Manaia.
