ROSES; SWEET PEAS

METHODIST CHURCH SHOW G. H. PERCY’S SWEET PEA TITLE. MISS PETTIGREW ROSE PRIZE. With more than 800 entries for the events, the annual rose and sweet pea show of the Hawera Methodist Church was opened yesterday by Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P. The quality of the blooms exhibited, besides being even, was in one or two classes outstanding, and the judge’s comments were favourable. The Taranaki sweet pea championship was won by Mr. G. H. Percy, Hawera, with an outstanding display of blooms. Miss A. H. Pettigrew was awarded the champion bloom of the show for roses and the New Plymouth Girls’ High School entry was second. In opening the show, Mr. Dickie, who was introduced by the Rev. Basil Metson, president of the show committee, said that in 50 years’ experience, he had not known a better season for growing than the present one. He congratulated the show committee on the excellence of the exhibits and the tasteful arrangement of the classes.

Mr. C. Goodson, judge of the rose and sweet pea classes, spoke on the exhibits, which he said were outstanding. The sweet pea section was the best he had ever seen at any Taranaki show and Mr. Percy’s blooms were very fine. What he appreciated was the way the children and newcomers to shows were learning the correct or professional methods of growing. The rose classes were good and' the whole exhibition was one of the finest he had seen anywhere.

The organisation was excellent. The secretary was Miss D. Bates, and Miss Molly Hurrell was assistant. Mr. W. Crompton was in charge of the bazaar.
