SPORTS OVERSEAS
GREATEST EVENTS OF THE YEAR.
NEW PLYMOUTH TOURISTS’ VISIT.
Seeing some of the most sensational world sporting events of the year was the interesting experience of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Ward, New Plymouth, during their recent tour of America and England.
They went to the Henley .regatta, saw J. E. Lovelock win the mile race at White City and during an Air Force gymkhana at Hendon saw the Lord Mayor’s son burnt to death when the aeroplane he was piloting crashed to destruction in view of the Prince of Wales and 200,000 people.
Watching Australia wrest the ashes from England was a very tame proceeding, according to the visitors. There was a good deal of feeling among the people on account of the exclusion of Larwood and Voce, but even this excitement did not compensate for the fatigue of standing all day in the heat watching play.
A more thrilling experience was seeing the Baer-Camera fight in America, where the great crowd formed a never-to-be-forgotten sight. Mr. Ward thought the contest would be over in three rounds as Baer knocked Camera down several times in the first two rounds. Camera was the heavier, but Baer the harder hitter. In the tent’., round Carnera’s legs began to double up beneath him and he was undergoing severe punishment.
