CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
STREETS OF NEW PLYMOUTH.
RETAILERS’ ASSOCIATION WISH.
A desire for some temporary improvement at Christmas time of street and footpath illumination for Devon Street, New Plymouth, apart from coloured lights, was expressed at, the monthly meeting last night of the New Plymouth Retailers’ Association, Mr. E. H. White presided over an attendance of 16. The meeting was tt> have discussed the proposed complete community lighting scheme, said Mr. White, but no word had been received from the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce sub-committee, which was awaiting reports from other centres. It was, however, necessary to have better footpath lighting, even if temporary, for the Christmas shopping sesaon. If need be the council could be asked to dispense with coloured lights to accede to the request.
It was stressed that footpath lighting was more important than street lighting. Members hoped that the request would not prejudice the complete scheme receiving consideration at an early date, but some immediate improvement was necessary. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs White, C. E. Morshead and V. R. Simpkiss, was appointed to get into immediate touch with the Chamber of Commerce sub-committee and approach the council at once.
