ENTERTAINING PLAY
FRENCH TENNIS EXHIBITION.
AUCKLAND MEN OUTCLASSED.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night.
'Although obviously short of practice, the French tennis players Brugnon and Boussus gave an entertaining exhibition against two Aucklanders, Bartleet and Sturt, to-day. The Aucklanders performed well, but the Frenchmen were much too good.
Results were:— Boussus beat Sturt 6—B, 6—4, 6—4. Brugnon beat Bartleet 3—6, 6 —o, 97. Brugnon and Boussus beat Sturt and Bartleet 6—3, 9—7, 6—4. There was spectacular play between Brugnon and Bartleet. The measured strokes of the Auckland player were in sharp contrast to the quick stab and varied spin employed by the Frenchman. Brugnon tried a net attack, but Bartleet met it with fine driving. Brugnon showed all his novel shots in the second and third sets. Sturt started well against Boussus and took the first set, chiefly from his opponent’s volleying errors. Accurate ground strokes by Boussus had Sturt on the run in the second and third sets. A concentrated attack on Sturt’s backhand in the third set proved successful. The chief features of the doubles match were the backhand strokes of Boussus, the combination of the Frenchmen and the improved form of Sturt.
