FINE CONTESTS SEEN

description of racing FAVOURITES RETURN DIVIDENDS. ONE SURPRISE AT THE MEETING. (By Wire—Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night, Four win favourites and seven of eight first place favourites returned dividends at the Takapuna Jockey Club’s spring meeting at Ellerslie to-day, when there were some fine contests. Illuminate’s Good Time. The each-way favourite Illuminate confirmed his good form of the first day by winning the Kawau Hurdles practically from end to end in the good time of 3m 10 3-ss. Morrath and King Win each attempted to go with him in the last seven furlongs, buf Illuminate was too good and they had no chance, Morrath finally falling at the second to last fence after being nearly down at the previous one. King Win was within a length of Illuminate at the second to last fence, but Illuminate jumped right away and was easing up at the finish, King Win just stalling off Kilmuir for second.

Dancing Lady Surprises. Dancing Lady registered a surprise in winning the Vauxhall Hack Handicap from the each-way favourite Lifeguard. Always well placed, she slipped through on the rails when Bellkyrian carried Lifeguard and Mata Hari wide at the turn, and went on to beat Lifeguard by three lengths. Ballymoney, finishing strongly, was two lengths away third, just ahead of Bellkyrian, who was galloped on and came back very lame, having had a tendon severed. Reviver and Mata Hari were the closest of the others. Lifeguard and Bellkyrian were both badly drawn at the barrier, Lifeguard beginning from very near the outside. Ballymoney was unlucky in being cut off early and then being badly stopped when making a good run in the straight. Dubarry’s Improvement,

Showing improvement upon her first day’s.running, Dubarry reached the’front quickly in the, Rakino Handicap and cleared away before reaching the , turn to win by five lengths from Velocipede, with Armacourt a moderate third and the others well beaten. Dubarry is a good filly by Chief Ruler from Jenolan, and cost 625 guineas at the last yearling sales at Trentham. Velocipede began badly, or otherwise ho would have made it much more difficult for the winner. He finished very solidly from the rear.

Kiltowyn Wins Narrowly. The each-way favourite. Kiltowyn was successful in the St. Andrew’s Handicap, but he had to be ridden right out to win in the last few strides from Carfex. Killadar set a fast pace and led into the Straight from Psychologist, Carfex, Karangapai, Caliente and Kiltowyn, who were closely bunched. Carfex had Killadar beaten inside the distance, but Kiltowyn finished in the gamest possible fashion to beat him by half a head. Killadar was less than a length away third and Caliente was close up fourth. Next to finish were Prolyxo and Karangapai. It was a soundly run race, the first half mile taking 48 3-5 s and the second 48 2-ss. Kiltowyn won on his merits. Carfex made a fine showing and just failed. Ruby Meteor Well Ridden. Another favourite was successful when Ruby Meteor scored in the Ngataringa Steeplechase. Absent made most of the running from Capella Abbey and Luminary, and he led over the stone wall into the straight from Copey and Ruby Meteor. Near the last fence Ruby Meteor assumed command, and although she ran it down slightly she went on to win by two lengths from Copey, who defeated Absent by a similar margin. Luminary was several lengths back fourth, with the others well beaten. Ruby Meteor was patiently ridden and when asked for a final effort she showed too much speed for Copey, who commenced his run rather early, going up to the leaders ascending the hill the second time. Wee Pat nearly lost her rider at the sod wall in the first round and was always well back.

Kelly’s Solid Performance. The three-year-old Kelly scored in good style from the favourite King Musk in the Pupuke Plate. Flammarion made most of the running and he and Sir Nigel were the leaders at the turn, where Kelly ran up on the outside of them and Scotland, King Musk and Respectful were handy. Kelly was in front below the distance and stayed to win by a length from King Musk, who finished solidly under pressure. Respectful, wide out, was half a length away third and King Rey was fourth, with Sir Nigel right up fifth. Kelly registered a solid performance. but King Musk was again a shade unlucky. Sir Nigel made an improved showing, just fading out of a place at the last. Respectful finished solidly after being near the rear early.

Star Artist in Fine Finish. There was a fine finish in the Cautley Handicap and the win favourite, Star Artist, won narrowly from Rereatu. King Ford and British Columbia were the pacemakers, with Rereatu and Star Artist, who began from the extreme outside, in the rear until reaching the straight. Star Artist finished strongly to score by a neck from Rereatu, who finished very wide out. Princes Star was half a head away third and King Ford was right up fourth. Every horse in the race with the exception of Rerepai had a chance at the distance, Star Artist and Rereatu finishing best. Lia Fail Still Improving.

Lia Fail, the second fancy on. both

machines, reached the front quickly in the Stanley Hack Handicap and won very decisively at the finish from Covonis, who was her nearest attendant entering the straight. Scotch Nation finished fairly well for third and Harvest Moon was fourth, ahead of Nun Nicer, who lost a forward position in the middle stages, and On Parade. Lia Fail is a fine big mare by Chief Ruler, who has been improving with every race this season. She was ridden 61b overweight by L. J. Ellis, who scored on the previous winner Star Artist. Harvest Moon made a creditable showing but was not quite good enough
