“THE FIREFLY” ENDS
MUSICAL COMEDY AT HAWERA. OPERATIC SOCIETY SEASON. The final performance of “The Firefly” presented by the Hawera Operatic Society at the Opera House last night drew a fairly large house. The show went with a swing from start to finish. At the final curtain a huge number of bouquets and other tributes were handed to members of the company. Opportunity was also taken to make presentations to Mr. Harison Cook, producer, and Mrs. R. A. Graham, pianist. Mr. J. M. Townsend, president of the society, thanked those who had assisted, and Mr. C. J. Roberts, on behalf of the principals of the company, thanked Mr. Cook. Mr. Cook, in reply, particularly thanked Mrs. R. A. Brewer, who played Mrs. Vandare. Mrs. Brewer, he said, though ill with influenza, had risen from her bed to play the final night and had gone back immediately after the performance. Although getting weaker and forced to speak instead of singing, she had carried on. That, said Mr. Cook, was one of the most sporting things he had known.
Mr. Cook said Hawera had not quite supported the show of which he was very proud.
