CORDIAL RELATIONS
ITALIAN CRUISER AT WELLINGTON.
STATE LUNCHEON FOR OFFICERS.
By Telegraph—Press Association.
Wellington, Last Night.
The captain and the officers of the Italian cruiser Armando Diaz were entertained at a State luncheon to-day. The Minister of Lands, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, presided. The Hons. J. G. Cobbe, Minister of Defence, and C. E. Macmillan, Minister of Agriculture, Sir Charles Statham and the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) were also present. Proposing the toast of the guests Mr. Ransom extended a cordial welcome to Captain Jachino and the officers and men of the cruiser. He said Italy and Britain had been traditional allies. Britain not only sympathised with the Italian struggle for independence but had also offered sanctuary to Garibaldi, Mazzini and other patriotic leaders. Captain Jachino thanked the people of the Dominion for the hearty welcome and warm hospitality. The visit of the cruiser would further the friendship between the two countries, and he hoped warships from Italy would visit the Dominion more frequently in future.
