SHIP STRIKES WHALE
DEATH OF MAMMAL IN TASMAN. MARIPOSA FORCED TO GO ASTERN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A whale estimated to be between 40 and 50 feet long was killed on the night of November 4 about 300 miles off Sydney Heads when the liner Mariposa struck it on her voyage from Auckland to Sydney The whale was seen about two feet under the surface of the water, lying across the course of the steamer and only a few feet from the bow. The whale made no attempt to move and it was struck heavily.
Captain Meyer stated that the liner was travelling at a speed of about 20 knots when it struck the whale. A seaman on duty on the forecastle head reported that the whale was struck in the middle and bled profusely from the mouth immediately after it was hit. ft was cut about and became fast around the bow so that the vessel had to go astern about two lengths to release the whale.
