RESTRICTION SOUGHT
BUILDING ALONG MOTOR ROADS. STRANGE ENGLISH DEVELOPMENT (British Official Wireless.) Rec. 5.5 p.m. Rugby, Nov. 10. A letter urging legislation to restrict the so-called “ribbon development” along new roads signed by prominent officials of motoring and other organisations has been sent to Mr. Ramsay MacDonald. The letter represents that three out of four accidents to pedestrians, especially young children, occur on roads fringed with houses. It states that the “ribbon development” is changing for the worse the social structure in which increasing numbers of people live. . The future shape of the country is declared to be at stake. “Ribbon development” is the expression coined for the tendency of many English towns to expand only along arterial roads instead of f-egularly outwards. In some instances ■'/here by-pass roads have been built to carry through motor traffic round towns, houses, petrol stations and stores have sprung up along almost the whole length, thus completely defeating the objects of the by-pass.
