CARNIVAL CONCLUDES

GOOD FIELDS TO THE END SIDELIGHTS ON THE RACING. SKY ROVER HAS FIRST WIN. .■# (By Wire—Special to News.) Christchurch, Last Night. The Canterbury Jockey Club had bright sunshine for the final day Of the spring racing carnival. The fields kept up wonderfully well and the racing was again very interesting. Form worked out well in most races. Wino set the pace in the Suburban Handicap. Vitaphone was in second place after three furlongs, and Semper Paratus and Sky Rover were next, with Cottingham. Palatinate and Streamline well back. At the entrance to the straight Cottingham and Palatinate nidved up. Sky Rover then took charge, stalling off a challenge by Semper Paratus by a head, with Hostile, who came with a late run, two lengths back. Palatinate and Vitaphone were next. Cottingham did not improve his chance by bolting nine furlongs while doing his preliminary. The winner is a brother to Red Heckle and this is his first win. He looks like improving. Semper Paratus ran a great race.

Maroha in Close Finish. Elbanor was soon in charge in the Seymour Handicap from Secret Paper, Owls Gleam, Tunneller, Cdlo&sian and Quite Sodn. while Maroha joined in at the entrance to the straight. Cdlossian then took charge but Quite Soon and Maroha led near the post, necks separating the placed horses. Tunneller was half a length away, with Bella Rosa, Silver Step, Elbanor and Golden Dart close up. The winner was a consistent performer at the meeting, as was Maroha. After being prominent early Haere Tonu met trouble at the home turn.

Mobile Stays Better. Cranford soon took charge from Mobile in the Members' Handicap, Cricket Bat heading Silver Streak for third after two furlongs. Mobile ran to the front at the entrance to the straight, winning easily by three lengths from Cricket Bat, who beat Cranford by over a length after heading him a furlong from the post. Silver Streak was three lengths away. Red Boa was last throughout. Mobile ran three good races at the meeting and is now staying bettei- than previously.

Round Up a Good Colt. Honour’s Lad, Round Up, Penelope and Bun Fight were the early leaders in the Pioneer Handicap. Bun Fight retired after three furlongs and Penelope a little further on. Round Up was out clear a furlong from the post, winning by two lengths from Hororata, who finished well. Silver Coat after following the leaders for half a mile never looked like overhauling the two in front. Honour’s Lad was a close fo.rth. Round Up looks a good colt and is likely to improve.

Vintage Fine Stayer. Rebel Star set the pace for the start in the Metropolitan, with Red Manfred, Southdown, Great Star, Sweet Agnes and Vintage in close attendance. Sweet Agnes gradually drifted back and at the home turn Great Star, Davolo, Red Manfred, Vintage and Gold Trail followed Rebel Star, while Polydora moved up to a good position, with Southdown handy. Vintage shot to the front as soon as the straight was reached, Gold Trail SOOn going in pursuit, followed by Southdown, Polydora and Red Manfred, while Davolo dropped out quickly. Vintage was never troubled, winning easily by two lengths. Southdown finished strongly, making up ground and beating Gold Trail by a neck. Polydora just hung on, being over a length away. Silver Sight was next, finishing fast, and the..; came Red Manfred, Signaller, Walton Park, Cough and Might. The winner’s performance was that of a high-class horse and he looks the best stayer in sight. Southdown ran his best race to date, Polydora could not muster up any extra pace at the final stage. Davolo and Sweet Agnes ran like non-stayers. Hunting Go Improves.

Earthquake led Pink Lapel, Scratchmere Scar and Heather Glow for the first six furlongs in the Ota io Plate, then retired, Heather Glow following suit when the straight was reached. Hunting Go was going well at this stage and took the lead a little further on. Tout le Monde came with a late rush but Hunting Go beat him by a neck. Scratchmere Scar was two lengths away and Earthquake was fourth, with Strong Light and Heather Glow next. Sibella never looked dangerous. The form of Hunting Go was much better than in earlier races. He is a good horse if he keeps sound.

An Impressive Win. Synagogue led out in the Stonyhurst Handicap, followed by Hostis, who took the lead after a furlong, Knock Out heading the others. These three were in line at the entrance to the straight, but Knock Out failed to stay. Synagogue was out clear at the distance, winning easily by two lengths from Tauramai, who finished well, beating Hostis by a Length. Knock Out was next. Synagogue won impressively and gave further evidence that he is a good colt. Hostis is a smart novice but is not a good stayer at present.

Sam Smith Again. Grecian Prince soon took the lead in the Cressy Handicap, with Fair Weather next and then Gaysome, Wise Choice and Sam Smith. Gi'ecian Prince and Wise Choice retired at the home turn. Fair weather led Gaysome and Sam Smith to the straight, but Sam Smith went on and beat Fair Weather easily by two lengths, with Gaysome two lengths away and then Kemal Pasha, Sea Fox and Rocket, these three finishing fast. Sam Smith ran three good races at the meeting and is not nearly done. Gaysome’s turn should come soon and Sea Fox should win more races.
