COUNTRY PLAY IN NORTH

TARURUTANGI CHECKED TIKORANGI PLAYS DRAWN GAME KEEN FIELDING ON BOTH SIDES. Keen fielding on both sides characterised the North Taranaki country cricket competition match played at Tarurutangi on Saturday, when a well-contested game saw Tarurutangi sustain its first check of the season, Tikorangi playing last year’s champions to a draw. Tikorangi made 104 and Tarurutangi lost four wickets for 87 runs. Winning the toss, J. Sampson, the Tarurutangi skipper, elected to field. O. Foreman and P. G. Sarten opened the batting to the bowling of Spence Giddy and Eric Giddy, each sent down a maiden over. Sarten opened out, while Foreman was restrained, and the score mounted to 25. Then Sarten, who had scored 18, including a six and two boundaries, was well caught by Spence Giddy off Eric Giddy, who three balls later clean-bowled J. Sarten without addition. Then at 32 Foreman, who had made 8, having a narrow escape from being run out at two, was bowled by E. Giddy with a ball that broke and kept lbw. C. Hoyle 21, including one six, and E. Foreman 14,. including one boundary, more than doubled the score before both fell to L. McKoy. Foreman was brilliantly caught at cover point by Fenwick. At luncheon the score was five for 69. B. Foreman, A. Foreman and V. Foreman, running smart singles, were largely responsible for the score reaching 104 before the last wicket fell. Eric Giddy sent down 16 overs for six wickets and 42 runs. L. McKoy captured three wickets for 10 runs, his figures at one stage reading three wickets for 2 runs. Spence Giddy bowled consistently, sending down 14 overs for 22 runs. With 100 minutes to play, Spence Giddy and Stan Giddy opened for Tarurutangi to the bowling of O. Foreman and S. Cole. Steady bowling kept them quiet, six runs coming off as many overs. Spence Giddy opened out and sent the leather to the leg boundary three times. With the score at 26, of which he had made 19, Spence Giddy drove a ball from Jas. Sarten hard for the boundary, but O. Foreman at mid-off held a brilliant catch. Norm Giddy assisted Stan Giddy to add 55 for the next wicket; when he, too, was well held in the same way by 8. Cole off P. G. Sarten. With the score at 74 Stan Giddy, who had made 28, including two boundaries, started to force the face and was clean-bowled. E. Giddy, 16 not out, saw the total reach 87 without any further loss. Each of the four Tikorangi bowlers captured a wicket. Details are:— TIKORANGI. First Innings. O. Foreman, b Giddy 8 P. G. Sarten, st. St. Giddy, bE. Giddy 18 J. Sarten, b E. Giddy 0 C. Hoyle, b L.
