OPATU TENNIS OPENING

NEWS OF TOKIRIMA DISTRICT. The Opatu tennis court was officially opened for the season’s play on Saturday. There was a very fair attendance despite dull, threatening weather. The clay court was in good condition for play. Luncheon and afternoon tea, were provided by the women of the district. The children were specially catered for. A competition was conducted by, Mr. A. Bennoch and was won by Miss Minnie Green. Mr. D. McLeod welcomed the visitors and added a word to the younger players, advising them to accept defeat in a gracious manner and they would, learn a lesson, that would serve them in after years. He declared the court open. At the conclusion of the day Mr. H. Johnston, president of the Tokirima Tennis Club, thanked the people of Opatu. Mr. G. Dennison thanked the Opatu people for their hospitality on behalf of Ohura players. Results of the day's play were:— First round: Mrs. L. Brown and B. Blanchard beat Mrs. T. Grant and C. Nolan 21—19, Miss K. McDonald and B. Old beat Miss Ivy Huckle and C. Parsons 21—17, Miss Jessie Neilson and A. Sandilands beat Mrs. C. Neilson and V. Old 21—12, Miss E. Garcia and H. Grant beat Mrs. H. Grant and H. Turner 21—19, Mrs. A. Sandilands and M. Addenbrooke beat Miss T. Penny and S. Law 21—13, Mrs. A. Christensen and L. Brown beat Miss Huckle and C. Neilsdn 21—15, Miss R. Shields and W. Tocker beat Mrs. M. Addenbrooke and A. McKenzie 21 —15, Miss T. Sandilands and J. Shields beat Miss M. Neilson and F. Smith 21—17, Mrs. McKenzie and H. Law beat Mrs. Turner and J. Potter 22—20. Second round: Mrs. A. Christensen and L. Brown beat Mrs. McKenzie and H. Law 21—18, Miss E. Garcia and H. Grant lost to Miss R. Shields and W. Tocker 22—24,; Miss T. Sandilands and J. Shields beat Miss McCabe and A. Siteman 21—18. Third round: Mrs. H. Turner and T. Grant lost to Miss McCabe and A. Siteman 21—18, Miss R. Shields and W. .'ocker lost to Miss T. Sandilands and J. Shields 27—25. Final: Miss T. Sandilands and J. Shields beat Miss McCabe and A. Siteman 21—19. Tennis Chib Dance.

A “mad hatter” dance organised by the Tokirima Tennis Club drew a good attendance at the hall on Friday. The various types of hats worn created much amusement, and the judges had a difficult task. The ladies’ prize was won by Mrs. A. Christensen and the men’s by Mr. H. Littlewood. The hall for the occasion was decorated by members of the club and others. A large bell was suspended over the centre of the hall and from this multi-coloured streamers spread to all sections. The entrance, stage and walls were completely transformed by an arrangement of Oregon pine, lilac, lycopodium, flowering cherry and japonica. The Otunui orchestra, assisted by Mr. and Mrs. McKenzie, Mr. L. McDonald and Miss Lacey, supplied the music. The master of ceremonies was Mr. R. Cameron, assisted by Mr. L. McDonald. A musical item was rendered by Mr. R. West on a musical saw. A competition foi' a cake dish was won by Mrs. R. Hales, Haeo. A Monte Carlo was won by Miss J. Wiltshire and Mr. M. Lay. The gathering was brought to a close with a shower and confetti and streamers. A meeting of householders was held in the Roto school room on Saturday night to discuss means of obtaining a Christmas tree for the children in that locality. Mr. L. Brown presided over a .fair attendance. After much discussion it was decided each householder should subscribe 5s towards the funds. The evening chosen was the night before the Christmas holidays. Mr. Turner and Mr. L. Brown are to supply a suitable tree, Mrs. H. Turner and Mrs. McKenzie to buy the gifts and Mrs. A. Christensen to be in charge of the bran tubs and to procure the trophies for them.

Personal News. Mrs. and Mr. Cook are the guests of Mr. W. Tocker. Mrs. H. Grant is spending a week's holiday at Wanganui and Turakina. Miss 'Garcia, Aria, visited the district last week-end and was the guest of Mrs. Grant. Mr. D. Mackay, agriculture inspector, visited the schools on Monday.
