NEW PLYMOUTH WINS

OLD BOYS SAVE ONE POINT GOOD DISPLAY BY BIRCH. NINKIE AND NASMITH BOWL WELL. New Plymouth (230) almost gained a four-point win over Old Boys (96 and 160 for eight), only lack of time preventing that result; Birch gave the best exhibition of the match, scoring 63 out of 96 in the first innings and rattling on 40 in the second. Lash (41) and Papps (40) also hit out successfully in the second innings, while Gilbert and Eggleton reached 14 and 15 not out respectively. Ninkie sent down 14 overs to collect four wickets for 21 runs and he was Old Boys’ stumbling block in the first innings. Nasmith was the most successful in the second innings, bowling 12 overs for 58 runs and five wickets.

Davison and Crapper carried on New Plymouth’s first day's innings, the former facing Eggleton. Davison scored a two and a single. Then Crapper succumbed to Eggleton’s fifth ball. Gilbert and Richardson opened for Old Boys. Richardson was the first victim in Ninkie’s second over. Birch became associated with Gilbert. Both batsmen found the bowling too steady to score freely. Davison dropped Birch off Ninkie at three and then Gilbert 0.7 Crapper at 11. The partnership added 27 runs before Gilbert (14) was bowled by Ninkie. The rest of thp team failed to remain and, with the exception of Birch, went cheaply. Birch succumbed in the latter part of the innings to a “wrong-'un” from Nasmith after scoring a finely compiled 63. He had given two chances early but otherwise scored freely and stylishly. Old Boys, being 134 runs behind, was forced to follow-on, and when Gilbert, Richardson and Kirwin were dismissed after only 13 runs had been scored prospects were not promising, but Papps and Birch added 65 and Lash and Papps 19, in partnership, to give the game a different aspect. Christensen and Harris added enough to pass New Plymouth’s total, and Medley (9) and Eggleton (15) two fours and six, played out time. Details are:— NEW PLYMOUTH. First Innings. K.
