CUP WINNER RUNS LAST

THE RACING DESCRIBED EXCITEMENT IN FINISHES. SEMPER PARATUS SURPRISES.

(By Wire.—Special to News). Christchurch, Last Night. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting was continued to-day in bright sunshine, though a cold wind sprang up later in the afternoon. The Middleton Handicap saw the day open with a surprise. Semper Paratus was soon in front, with Revision, Sky Rover and Heather Glow next. After three furlongs Streamline was second to Semper Paratus, while Honest Maid and Earthquake followed them round the home turn, where Streamline retired. There was no further change, Semper Paratus beating Honest Maid by half a length, with Earthquake a neck away and Revision close up. Chaste, Cottingham and Heather Glow were next. The winner is an elder brother of Cricket Bat. He always could gallop but is not reliable. Emotion disappointed, also Hunting Go, but Heather Glow ran a fine race.

Weight Beats Symcony. In the Irwell Handicap Symcony and Silver* Sail soon were out clear, Round Up following them to the course proper, with Hine Ra, Hororata and Penelope next. Symcony tired under her weight, Silver Sail winning decisively by half a length, while Symcony hung on only long enough to beat Round Up by a neck. Hororata was two lengths away, and Penelope and Hine Ra were next. The winner had been second in three previous starts and should win more stakes. Round" Up will improve and looks like staying. Cranford Wins Criterion.

Fair Weather, Mobile and Palermo began best in the Criterion Handicap, but Mobile soon lost his place, being last at the end of two furlongs, where Cranford was showing the way to fair weather and Gaysome. The positions were unchanged to the straight, where Copyist moved up after being slow to get going. Fair Weather retired a little further on, Mobile appearing with a strong run. Cranford hung on to beat Mobile by half a length, with Gaysome half a length away, while Silver Streak finished fast, just beating Copyist, who failed in the run home. Cranford’s Riccarton form has been very consistent as he won a race at the Grand National meeting and was third in the Stewards’ Handicap. Mobile’s was a good performance. Gaysome should soon win. j Sporting Blood Again.

Pin Money soon took charge in the Derby, while Wonderful after being last away was second after three furlongs. Horn’s Reef, Tauramai and Sporting Blood were next. Synagogue was last. There was no change till the home turn, where Horn’s Reef retired, while Tauramai joined Pin Money in the lead. Pin Money was beaten when the straight was, reached. When fairly in line for home Sporting Blood took charge, Synagogue joining in at the distance. Synagogue was going well at this stage but Sporting Blood gained a neck advantage 100 yards from home and held it, Tauramai hanging on well three lengths away. Wonderful, Hom’s Reef, Pin Money and Pawky followed at intervals. Sporting Blood won like a sound stayer bitt Synagogue also showed himself a good colt. Stceton Last..

Steeton soon took charge from Passion Fruit', Davolo /and Horowhenua in the Fendalton Handicap. Cough, Ranelagh and Vintage moved up after two furlongs. Steeton led Davolo, Ranelagh and Vintage at the home turn. Vintage went to the front after the straight was reached, Silver Sight moving up. Vintage won pulling up with ridiculous ease by half a length from Silver Sight, who stalled off Polydora by a neck. Passion Fruit was two lengths . away and Davolo next, Steeton and Horowhenua were last. The performance of Vintage was very impressive. Made an Exhibition.

Rebel Chief made an exhibition of his opponents in the Randolph Handicap. He took the lead early and when the straight was reached cleared out from the opposition, winning easily by three lengths. Top Rank after being first away met serious trouble but came with a good run to cut out Colossian for second place. Silver’ Step finished well fourth. Elbanor showed speed but stopped badly. Weatherly and Braw Lad were unlucky in the early stages. Rebel Chief looks a good prospect in open races. Rebel Star- took charge early in the Epsom Handicap, Kemal Pasha, Red Racer, Red Boa, Cleaner and Tout le Monde following to the straight, where Red Racer retired. Red Boa then shot to the front and stalled off a late challenge from Rebel Star by half a. length, with Kemal Pasha another half length away and then Quietly, who finished fast. Tout le Monde and Cleaner were next. Red Boa is racing with great consistency this season. Rebel Star finished strongly after losing his position at the entrance to the straight.
