GEORGE ARLISS AT HIS BEST. “THE HOUSE OF ROTHSCHILD.” George Arliss has been seen in many pictures, but in none has he achieved such a peak as in “The House of Rothschild,” which opens a six-day season at the Hawera Opera House on Saturday. The picture is one of the few justifying the term brilliant, and the acting alone is remarkable.

Set against a picturesque period of European history, the story deals with the rise of the great banking house of Rothschild. From the squalid ghetto of Frankfurt the fame and power of the firm grows world-wide. The direction of the picture has given it a remarkable compass and in every way the show is remarkable. George Arliss’ acting is magnificent.

“SONG OF THE PLOUGH.” Forming a cameo of English life, “The Song of the Plough,” which opens a twoday season at the Hawera Opera House to-day, is one of the most beautiful productions yet made in English’studios. From first to last, the picture holds an interest both unusual and entertaining. The Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe were among those who saw it in Wellington, and they gave the picture warm support.

The picture brings to the screen one of the most exquisite dramas set against the charm and glory of the rolling downs of England. Humorous incidents are not neglected, and the cameo life studies of the quack medicine vendors at the fairs and the revelry at the village inn are entertainments in themselves.
