Raymond Nicolas Landry Poincare, a former Prime Minister and President of France, and one of the country’s greatest statesmen, is dead. His health had been failing since the serious operation he underwent in 192 j. He collapsed on Saturday. President of France during the eventful war years, M. Poincare guided the republic in a way that made him one of the greatest national figures. He was bom on August 20, 1860, at Bar-le-Duc, was called to the Bar, and for some time contributed law court report, to Le Voltaire. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1887 and was Minister of Finance unde, the Dupuy Cabinet from 1893 to 1895, and again in 1906. Since 1903 he had been a senator. On the fall of the Caillaux Cabinet in January, 1912, he became Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was elected President in January, 1913. He retired from the Presidency in 1920 and both as a politician and a journalist stood for a ‘strong nationalist policy. Consequently in 1922 he returned to office as Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs. M. Poincare resigned in 1924, but he was again Prime Minister from 1926 to 1929 and for two years was also Minister of Finance, during which period he achieved the stabilisation of the franc.

He was a member of the Academie Francaise, to which he was elected in 1909. He wrote a great deal. His, memoirs have been widely read both in French and in an English translation.
