RAWHITIROA SCHOOL

RECENT ACTIVITIES REVIEWED. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Rawhitiroa school committee was held on Monday. Those present being Messrs. L. Prankerd (chairman), H. Belcher, J. Kirk, J. Cocker and the headmaster, Mr. E. G. Smith. The headmaster reported as follows: Roll number 38, average attendance for lie month, 31.66. Measles were prevalent n the school, there having been 18 cases p date and of whom five had returned io school. It was decided to support the Eltham ichool committee in' its efforts to obtain i high school at Eltham. Eleven beds for forestry seeds have been made by the children, and the necessary timber and scrim to protect the leeds will be purchased immediately. The secretary reported the theft of a pair of hinges and bolts from a new gate recently purchased by the committee. The fittings were removed before the gate was hung. Lawsaniana hedges have been planted and are doing well, as is also pinus plantation on the swamp. Working bees were held in order to fell the two pine trees overhanging the road. This work was done with a stump puller lent by Mr. J. Rye. The committee was indebted to Messrs. F. Belcher and W. Johnston for valuable assistance. The trees were now being sawn up for firewood. While cycling to school in a gale last month, Miss Rowe, assistant teacher, collided with a cow. and fell heavily, but attended school as usual and in spite of hav" g had tw- stitches inserted in a cut on her head, Miss Rowe was at her post as usual next morning. Her interest in her work and unconcern for. herself was commented upon by the committee. On September 1. the school was visited by Messrs. J. Barclay, H. W. Insull and- McCay, who expressed themselves pleased with the improvements recently carried out. The agricultural instructor complimented Mr. E. Smith on the instruction the children were receiving in this branch of work. Victor Belcher, was congratulated on his success last year in the calf-rearing competition, his Shorthorn calf being first for dairy type and first foi condition. The calves were judged at the Hawera jubilee show. Donations for prizes in the local calf-rearing competition have already been -eceived from Messrs. H. Belcher and J. Kirk.
