QUADRANGULAR CONTEST
SCHOOL AND ITS OLD PUPILS FIRST EVENT HELD AT STRATFORD. FOOTBALL, HOCKEY, BASKETBALL. Rugby, hockey and basketball teams of the Stratford High School and the"Eltham, Inglewood and Stratford branches of the school old pupils’ association engaged in a quadrangular tournament at the school yesterday with a view to bringing old pupils and students of the school together in a spirit of friendly rivalry. So successful was the innovation that it is likely it will become an annual event. Points were awarded to the teams, and on the aggregates over the three divisions Stratford and school topped the list with 11 points each, Eltham was second with eight and Inglewood scored five points. Games were fought out in nearly all cases closely, and though the two teams which tied at the top were six points ahead of Inglewood,; the actual, difference was very small. . . . The idea. of contesting the competition over three branches of winter spprt : was a happy thought. School, by virtue of the fact that all jts players were units of teams knit, by engagement in the winter competitions, held an advantage that offset the greater age . and experience of the old pupils, while Stratford, with more old pupils to draw on than either Inglewood or Eltham enjoyed a basic advantage. Nevertheless, the old pupils from the other two centr.es were no mean opponents, especially when it is remembered that it. was only recently that branches of the school old pupils’ association have been formed at Eltham and Inglewood. . -. • . Apart from anything else, the competition served to show the large .number of the old pupils of the school that is still in Central Taranaki, and old time associations were renewed, and cemented in a way that no other social function could have equalled. After the tournament concluded the principal of the school (Mr. A. H. R. Amess) enlarged on the social value of such a gathering, and stated that the tournament filled the need for a fixture that would bring together as many of the old pupils as possible. He expressed pleasure at the formation of branches at Eltham and Inglewood, and referred to the benefits old pupils could derive from active participation in those branches. The pupils of the school, he added, were always eager to ■’ associate entries which had been received that day. ' Details of the games played are:—' Football. School 8 v. Stratford; 0. Eltham 5 v.
