KEENLY FOUGHT CYCLE RACE. P. WISNEWSKI THE WINNER. A course of 31 miles extending from Stratford to Douglas, back to Kahourie bridge, up the Beaconsfield Road to Midhirst thence home to Stratford proved a severe test to members of the Stratford Cycle Club who participated in the fifth race of the second series yesterday. Fortunately, ideal weather was experienced, and on the good roads, fast time was made by all riders. A feature of the race was the fine display given by S. Harrison off the 18 minute mark. 'This limit rider held his place at the head of the race right uatil Stratford came in sight only a mile away. He was then overtaken by P. Wisnewski, A. Mclver and C. Pittams, the four riding out the finish together. In a fighting sprint over the last quarter of a mile P. Wisnewski gained the first place by inches from Pittams, the other two being less than a length away. Results are:— P. Wisnewski (8m), Ih 35m 25s 1 C. Pittams (sm), Ih 32m 25 l-5s 2 A. CARDIFF CONTEST AT CARDS. CONCERT FOR HALL FUNDS. On Friday evening the Cardiff footballers’ card team was engaged in a hard fought contest, this time their opponents being the ladies of the district. The final scores were ladies 68, footballers 70. At the conclusion of the cards the footballers were the guests of their opponents at supper. The concert and dance, for which an energetic ladies’ committee had been busily engaged for some time, was staged on Tuesday evening. The night was one of the coldest experienced in the district for some time, but despite this the hall was well filled. The concert programme consisted of community singing led by Mr. Pat Vincent and Mr. A. O’Sullivan, interspersed with items by a party of performers from Stratford. Songs were sung by Mrs. Mcßeth, Mr. Harper and Mr. Arthur O’Sullivan Little Thelma Cox sang, too, and later did the Irish jig. Miss Galbraith was the accompanist. Mr. Evans gave two cornet solos and Mr. Littlejohn gave an impersonation. Mr. H. B. Limmer, on behalf of the hall society, thanked the performers for the programme and also the ladies committee which had done so much towards the success of the venture. Music for the dances was played by Mr. Feeke, and the master of ceremonies were Messrs. B. Huckstep, C. Hawkes and M. Wickham. Mrs. and Miss Low are the guests of Mrs. P. Marchant. Mrs. D. Cameron and Miss E. Cameron returned from their holiday at Hokitika. Mrs. D. Shannon has returned from a visit to Tariki. Miss Ethel Belcher has returned from a holiday vk’it to Invercargill. IMPROVEMENTS TO BATHS. TOKO SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the monthly meeting of the Toko school committee on Monday the following were present: Messrs. Murray (chairman), Were (secretary), Milne, Caskey, Needham and the headmaster. It was decided to have another part of the grounds fenced off for a horse paddock and to have the present horse paddock ploughed, cropped and eventually sown down again in grass. More work is to be done at the school swimming baths before the swimming season opens. The headmaster reported that the average attendance for last term had been 89, the average roll number 97.1 The roll number at the beginning of the third term was 103. Over 70 children were given cocoa daily throughout the second term, while in the third term i,t. was being given only on cold days. i LEAGUE CYCLING. KAPONGA COMMITTEE MEETS. Mr. C. H. Brewer presided over a meeting of the management committee of the Kaponga League Cycling Club on Wednesday evening. A letter from the secretary of the Circular Road Race Committee asked whether the Kaponga Club could assist in raising finance for the annual road race round the mountain. The committee had increased the prize lists, and success could only be achieved by the co-operation of all sports bodies as the road race was not self-supporting. The letter further asked whether it was the intention of the Kaponga Club to provide any trophies for competition among its own member, taking part in the race. It was decided to donate a small cup for the first Kaponga rider to finish. As for assistance towards finances the committee decided to inform the Circular Road Race Committee that owing to the club having just been resuscitated and not yet properly upon its feet it regretted that it could not at this stage make any appeal for funds for the purpose asked for. It was stated that the euchre tournament recently held by the club in an effort to augment its funds had resulted in a slight loss. This was mainly due to a big counter-attraction of a similar nature in the district on the same evening. A communication was received from Mr. H. Bocock, New Plymouth, about the disposal of the cup donated by him for competition among young riders. Mr. Bocock said the club was at liberty to utilise the cup as it thought best, and it was ultimately decided that it would serve as a points prize for the road racing season which would finish at the end of October. The matter of raising funds for the immediate needs of the club was left in the hands of the social committee. The question of holding an evening track meeting at V.ctoru Park was discussed. It was considered that, if properly organised, an evening meeting could be made entertaining and a source of revenue to the club. The proposal was popular with the committee, and it was decided to go into the matter at an early date.

The following handicaps have been declared by Mr. A. Melville for Saturday’s race, which is to be twice round the Palmer Road block, 22 miles:—R. Edgecombe, R. Hosie lAm.. C. Brewer, J. Hosie 2m., D. Coleman 3m., C. Mainddnald 6m., W. Lester, B. Williams, B. Walker 7m.
