The British Association for the Advancement of Science elected Professor W. W. Watts, the eminent geologist, president for 1935, states a London cable.
Sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. T. C. List was expressed at the monthly meeting of the Inglewood Borough Council on Tuesday night The Mayor, Mr. J. Gibbs, said Mr. List was well-known throughout New Zealand. He had sacrificed his health for the good of the public.
Archdeacon F. W. Chatterton, vicar of St. Luke’s, Rotorua, has intimated to the Bishop of Waiapu his intention to retire from his ministry at the end of the present year. The archdeacon has been at Rotorua for nearly 16 years. He had previously spent 17 years in’the training of Maori clergy at Te Rau College, Gisborne, following 16 years’ service in the Nelson district.
Sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. T. C. List was expressed at the monthly meeting of the Waitara Borough Council last night. One could not be but impressed with Mr. List’s high ideals, said the Mayor, Mr. J. Hine. His earnestness of purpose and sympathy for others had won for him the admiration of all. His comparatively early demise was a distinct loss to the province. Had he lived Mr. List would have gone far in the public life of the Dominion.
The death has occurred of Mr. William Carr probably Blenheim’s best known resident, aged about 78, states a Press Association message. He was a member of the Wairau River Board for 48 years and the Blenheim Borough Council almost continuously since 1903, and was on the Marlborough Power Bokrd since its inception. He was chief engineer for the Blenheim Fire Board for well over seven years. He commenced business as a tinsmith in a small shed in 1881 and died one of the principal business men of Marlborough and one of the largest proprietary owners at Blenheim. His interests include an extensive hardware, plumbing and electrical business, a building and contracting business, a joinery factory, timber mills and a picture theatre. He married in 1931 and is survived by a widow, but no family.
