GIRL GUIDE MOVEMENT

SUCCESSFUL KAPONGA YEAR.

MESSAGE FROM COMMISSIONER.

In forwarding the annual report and statement of accounts for the year just ended, Mrs. T. N. Watt, Opunake, district commissioner of the Kaponga, Otakeho and Opunake Girl Guide Association, wrote congratulating the Kaponga Guides and committee on the splendid results obtained. It was extremely creditable to all concerned and showed that Guiding at Kaponga was very much alive, she said. It was also equally gratifying to be able to say that the Guide company was thoroughly worthy of the committee’s support. The company and officers were exceptionally keen and efficient, which remarks also applied to the Brownie pack and officers. The president, Mrs. J. Guy, was in the chair and there was a good attendance. The seventh annual report said that the ten monthly committee meetings were all well attended. In recognition of her splendid services during her term of office as secretary, Mrs. C. H. Brewer had been presented with a thanks badge. Founder’s Day service held at St. Mark’s Anglican Church had been attended by the committee, Guides and Brownies An effort had been made to augment the funds by a series of fortnightly flag five hundred afternoons. Committee members had offered their homes and had provided trophies. As well as being thoroughly enjoyable the afternoons had resulted in £6 being added to the finances. The expenditure during the year had amounted to £l3 14s lOd, but thanks to the efforts of members and a good balance from the previous year a credit of £l6 16s 4d remained. The president congratulated all concerned on the splendid showing made. Mrs. F. N. Gardner, secretary, thanked members for the support they had given her. It was her first year in the Guide movement and she had enjoyed every minute of it, she said.

The report submitted by Captain Miss I. E. Melville read in part: There are 18 Guides, eight of whom are second-class, seven tenderfoots and three recruits. During the year the following proficiency badges were won: Child nurse, Norah Jackson, Vera Jackson, Doris Guy, Gladys Scott, Phyllis Gardner, Joan Brewer; sick nurse, Norah Jackson, Vera Jackson, Doris Guy (renewed), Phyllis Gardner, Iris Anderson; knitters, Norah Jackson; cooks, Elsie Tattersail; thrift, Joan Brewer, Phyllis Gardner. Acting-Lieutenants J. Guy and L. Davies, before sitting for their lieutenants’ warrants, were completing the tests for the first-class badge. The attendance at company meetings had been well maintained, and they were indebted to Messrs. Jackson and Eden for conveying the Rowan Guides to meetings. The annual report of the Brownie pack, presented by Brown Owl Miss M. Harding stated, inter alia: The year had been a very successful one in Browny-land. Although very sorry to lose the services of Miss Linda Davies ,as acting-Tawny Owl, they were extremely fortunate in bringing back to the ranks Miss Irene Brewer, who was proving a most efficient help in the pack, especially in assisting the first-class Brownies with their semaphore signalling. Miss Brewer is shortly to sit for her warrant. Headquarters forwarded a correspondence training series which was proving valuable in the work. There were three new members for the year, Betty Taylforth, Joan Betts and Maureen Bennie. Three girls had gained their second-class badge and seven their first-class. One Brownie “flew” to the Guides.

The following officers were elected:— President, Mrs. J.. Guy; • vice-presidents, Mrs. J. Hessell and Mrs. E. L. Abbott; committee, Mesdames I. Evans, A. W. Anderson, T. Bennie, M. C. Crighton, A. W. Betts, P. Harding and officers exofficio. Mrs. F. N. Gardner was elected secretary and Mesdames R. G. Cook, C. H. Brewer and J. Tattersall as committee members, subject to their consent. . The president and secretary were appointed delegates to the annual .provincial meeting to be held at New Plymouth on October 5. Mrs. J. Hessell was appointed delegate to the provincial quarterly meetings. Mr. F. W. Fallows, hon. auditor, was accorded a vote of thanks. The secretary was asked to write a letter to Mrs. R. G. Cook conveying the committee’s sympathy because of the prolonged illness of Mr. Cook. . The committee, however, received with much pleasure the latest report which indicated a decided improvement in Mr. Cook’s health.

Cicely Courtneidge as an adagio dancer forms one of the hilarious scenes in the most hilarious production of “Soldiers of the King,” which opened a two-night sea-' son at the Hawera Opera House last night. Appearing for the first time in films without her husband, Jack Hulbert, Cicely is ably supported by Edward Everett Horton in the uproariously funny comedy scenes of the production. As the head of the Marvello troupe of acrobats Miss Courtneidge has brilliant opportunities and they are taken full advantage of. The picture is not a war story. There are several catchy tunes and the picture is one of the brightest for some weeks.
