NORMANBY SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

REDUCED AVERAGE ATTENDANCE.

The monthly meeting, of the Normanby School Committee was held on Monday evening, there being present Mr. A. Galloway (chairman), Mesdames W. G. Gane and T. Evans, Messrs. P. Whitelock and T. Evans, secretary.

The report of the headmaster (Mr. T. Taylor) stated that in August tKe school was visited by Dr. Mary Champtaloup, Mr. R. Syme, the senior inspector, Mr. A. Bain, and Mr. Henry. The term tests had shown satisfactory results. The calfrearing competitions had commenced. It was necessary to have a supervisor. The second term closed with a reduced average attendance owing to the epidemic of measles. During the term there were ho less than 28 excepted half-days. The third term opened with a good attendance, the roll number being reduced by two. Most of the properties changing hands had been taken over, by people without children or with children under school age. The concert at the end of the term gave ! great satisfaction to the staff because of, the excellent support given by the residents. The sale of tickets realised nearly £B. During the holidays shrubs were planted in vacant places in the shrubbery. An interesting portfolio has been received by the Junior Red Cross containing examples of the Work of the Japanese school children. The fence posts had been painted and the lawns and gardens are in good order. A report was received from the inspectors stating that all matters ip. connection with the school were satisfactory, and commenting on the general excellence of every department. It was decided to purchase a new lawn-mower, and also to plant a live hedge on the south boundary. It was reported that several minor repairs were necessary to the buildings, and it was decided to write to the education board asking that their architect visit the school. It was decided to procure coconut matting for the cricket pitch. Mesdames Gane and Evans were appointed a visiting committee for the month. Messrs. Bennett and Whitelock were appointed supervisors for calf-rearing. It was decided to procure the timber for a saw-horse for the use of the school. . The Rev. J. K. Watson, Normanby, is on a short visit to Wellington. Mr. J. Young, Normanby, who underwent an operation in a Hawera private hospital, is making excellent progress and was able to return home last week. AUROA SCHOOL COMMITTEE. LOWER NUMBER ON THE ROLL. The monthly meeting of the Auroa School Committee was held recently. Those present were Mr. J. C. Duff (chairman), Mrs. Benton (secretary) and Messrs. P. C. Hall, T. Hooper, T. Haworth, T. Blair and J. Hooper. The headmaster reported the following weekly attendances and rolls: 102.7, 117; 103.9, 113; 96.6, 114; 104.0, 114. The number on the roll at the end of the first term was 119 and the number on the roll at the end of the second term was 114. The average attendance for the term was 104.9 (excluding 40 excepted halfdays). There was one withdrawal and eight admissions at the beginning of the third term.

The Manaia scout concert raised £3 2s 6d for the school. Th? proceeds from the ’ picture benefit was £2 8s 6d, making a total of £5 Ils in hand for the library and picture-frame fund. The football I team combined with Kapuni won the | group football competition, losing only one match. Okaiawa beat it in a succeeding match. The girls’ basketball team also won the group competition, winning all games. In the play-off with Tawhiti it ■ was defeated 12-8. Messrs. Hooper and Day took the girls to Manaia. The committee is erecting a sheltershed . at the corner of the Oeo Road for children travelling by bus. This will prove a great convenience. The visiting committee reported a

need for some spring latches and bolts. Decayed manure is to be procured for two experimental plots for the school. Mr. Blair was elected a visiting committee for the coming month.
