FIVE PER CENT. CUT RESTORED.

PATEA HOSPITAL BOARD ACTION.

The restoration of the later 5 per cent, wage cuts imposed on the staff as an economy measure was decided on by the Patea Hospital Board yesterday. The decision was made as a result of the Government’s action in restoring the 5 per cent, cut on civil servants’ wages. The restoration will date from September 1. The action does not affect the earlier 10 per cent, cut imposed by the board.

The suggestion that the salaries be increased to their previous level was placed in the form of a motion by Mr. A. T. Christensen, who said the board could well afford to make the move. Local bodies, he thought, should follow the Government’s example. Mr. C. R. Honeyfield, chairman, suggested that the position of the Government and the Patea Hospital Board were somewhat different. The Government expected to balance its budget, but that did not seem possible for the board.

Mr. F. Sheild, secretary, stated that the restoration would mean £33 for the rest of the financial year. He agreed that the extra pay would cover the payment of the, unemployment levy for the members of the staff concerned. The board agreed the idea was a sound one from the point of view of confidence and satisfaction and Mr. Christensen’s motion was carried. PERSONAL ITEMS.
