Rec. 7 p.m. . Paris, June 2. A new French tennis champion was proclaimed to-day, when after a match lasting 2 hours 3 minutes von Cramm (Germany) defeated J. Crawford (Australia) after the latter had led by two sets to one and had had a match point at 5—4 in the fourth set. . , From start to finish both gave a brilliant exhibition of sideline driving, each player sweeping his opponent off the court through sheer brilliancy. Crawford appeared slack in the fifth set and Cramm raced to a 5—2 lead and won the set 6—3 for the championship. The remaining results are:— Men’s Doubles:—Semi-finals: Crawford and McGrath (Australia) defeated Menzel (Czecho-Slovakia) and Hecht (Germany), 3—6, 6—l, 6—l, 6—l; Borotra and Brugnon (France) defeated Quist and Turnbull (Australia), 6—2, 14—12, 6—2. Mixed Doubles:—Semi-final: Quist (Australia) and Miss Ryan (United States) defeated Crawford (Australia) and Miss Scriven (England), 6—2, 4—6, 6—l. Men’s Singles:—Final: Cramm defeated Crawford, 6—4, 7—9, 3—6, 7—5, 6 3. Women’s Doubles:—Semi-final: Mdlle. Mathieu and Miss Ryan defeated Mdlle. Henrotin and Miss Andrews, 4—6, 6—2, 6 —3. Menzel and Hecht began very strongly against Crawford and McGrath, but at the beginning of the second set the Australians took control. Menzel and Hecht both failed to reproduce anything like the form they had shown against Perry and Hughes. Borotra and Brugnon displayed their* old time generalship in defeating Quist and Turnbull. The second set took an hour to play. Quist failed to win any of his first four services and was also uncertain overhead. Throughout the match Brugnon gave a brilliant display of driving.
CONTEST FOR DAVIS CUP.
UNITED STATES v. MEXICO.
Rec. 5.5 p.m. Baltimore, June 2. In the concluding singles matches of a Davis Cup contest, F. X. Shields (U.S.A.) defeated Angel Roldan (Mexico), 6—2, 6—l, 6—2, and S. B. Wood (U.S.A.) defeated Tapia (Mexico), 6—4, 9—7, 6-0. Van Ryn, it is announced in a Baltimore message, has definitely decided not to accompany the team to Europe for inter-zone matches, feeling unable to leave his business at Philadelphia from time to time.
