KAIMATA DISTRICT NEWS

INTERSCHOOL SPORTS MATCHES. PERSONAL AND GENERAL ITEMS. On Thursday afternoon the Raleigh senior basketball team played a Kaimata team on the Kaimata courts. The teams were: Raleigh, Misses M. Calghei, V. Redwood, V. Stead, J. Worthington, M. Turner, H. Johnston, M. Brough, E. Bird; Kaimata, E. Stieller, L. Ward, N. Stieller, E. Klenner, E. Herlihy, I. Buckley, P. Paul, C. Phillips, R. Paul. The match commenced at a brisk pace, Kaimata netting a goal in the first few minutes. The Kaimata centres kept their forwards well supplied with the ball, but too many shots at goal went begging. Raleigh forwards found the Kaimata defence too strong during the first half. At half-time the scores were Kaimata 7, Raleigh 0. In the second half Raleigh reorganised its team and played more vigorously. The Raleigh forwards and centres worked hard, and succeeded in capping several of their attacks. The home forwards though given plenty of ball rounded off very few of their attacks, the ball just missing the net time after time. The final scores were: Kaimata 11, Raleigh 4. Miss R. Dobson refereed. Kaimata scorers were E. Stiellere 5, N. Stieller 4, L. Ward 2.

On Friday afternoon the Tariki school Rugby and basketball teams visited Kaimata to play the local children. The teams were: Tariki, basketball: R. Bowling (captain), N. Knowles, H. James, M. Hucker, R. Knowles, J. Jameson, J. Dodd, S. Manning, N. McElroy. Rugby: J. Knowles (captain), T. McCullum, R. Knowles, T. Gush, J. Jackson, PKnowles, K. Lawrence, A. Lawrence, R. Kerr, N. Hillard.

Kaimata, basketball, D. Wood (captain), S. Knofflock, S. Bracegirdle, M. Thorby, P. Paul, M. Herlihy, D. Chapman, J. Parker, A. Collingwood; Rugby, T. Herlihy, E. Peters, B. Roley, C. Jordan, M. Harnett, C. Capper, D. Blackboum, N. Instone (captain), R. Blackbourn, B. Burckett.

In spite of a steady, light rain having set in, a large number of spectators witnessed the matches. The wet conditions made the balls very hard to handle. At football the teams were evenly-matched for size and weight, but at basketball the visitors had a considerable advantage in height. The football was strenuously contested, Kaimata at first having the advantage. The Kaimata forwards fed their backs at every opportunity. After repeated attacks E. Peters kicked over the line and followed up fast to touch down for a good try. Tariki then attacked strongly and carried play to the Kaimata line. From a scrum on the line Tariki forced its way over for Knowles to touch down. From the kick-off Kaimata set up a hot attack. Harnett secured the ball and sent Jordan away for the line to score a good try after fending off three tackles. In the second spell Kaimata strove hard to increase the score and Tariki to equalise. Final scores were Kaimata 6, Tariki 3. At basketball a good match was seen. The final score was 4 goals to 2. Kaimata was almost continuously on attack throughout the second spell, but the small Kaimata goalies could not overcome the defence of the tall Tariki defenders. Scorers for Tariki were M. Hucker 2, N. Knowles 1, H. James 1. Kaimata scorers were D. Chapman 1 and J. Parker 1. After tire matches the teams were entertained at afternoon tea in the ball by the ladies. Personal. Miss E. Klenner, Junction Road, has returned from Ratapiko, where she has been spending a holiday with her sister. Mr. Buckley, Waitui, played for many of the dances at the kitchen evening tendered to Miss E. Herlihy and Mr. G. Scott on Friday lasi.
