GIRL GUIDES’ ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL BIRTHDAY PARTY. St. Mary’s Hall presented a gay and happy scene on Saturday evening, when the New Plymouth Girl Guides’ Association held their eighth annual birthday party. Long tables arranged in the hall were decorated with autumn-tinted flowers and foliage while the gay streamers representing the colours of the four companies present lent a festive air to the scene.
The Guides formed a guard of honour to welcome the guests, several of whom had come from other districts, including Kaponga and Waitara. At the conclusion of the birthday tea Mrs. T. Wilson, president of the New Plymouth branch of the association, welcomed the guests and called upon Mrs. D. K. Morrison, provincial commissioner, to cut the cake. This had been made by Mrs. W. Berridge and iced by Mrs. Morrison. With its tiny flags waving and its candles glowing and four miniature celluloid guides standing guarding it, it looked an impressive sight in the darkened hall and the youngest guide present had the honour, of blowing the candles out. Mrs. Morrison in a short speech introduced Miss Harris, who recently arrived from Rotorua and who has Jteen appointed divisional commissioner for North Taranaki. Mrs. Morrison spoke in glowing terms of Miss Harris’ record as a guide in Rotorua. Archdeacon G. H. Gavin and Archdeacon F. G. Evans both gave short addresses and cheers were given by the Guides for all who had helped to make the party a success. After the tea a short concert was given by the Guide companies and the evening closed with the singing of campfire songs.
