THE RACING DESCRIBED

WEE PAT’S GREAT DISPLAY

VIEW HALLOO WELL HANDLED.

MANY FALLS IN JUMPING RACES.

(Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night.

The course at Ellerslie was very heavy for the opening of the Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting at Ellerslie yesterday and falls were numerous in the jumping races, eight of the 16 runners failing to complete the course in the Great Northern Hurdles. Three favourites —Tudor, View Halloo and Silent Bill —were successful' and the best dividend of the day was returned by Ardmanning, who finished second in the Hunt Club Hurdles. Rebel Star’s Good Showing.

The favourite, Rebel Star, made a fine attempt to win the first division of the Jervois Handicap, but he was . comfortably beaten in the last little bit by the third fancy Monanui, who carried 21b. overweight. Rebel Star led early and was then steadied in behind Mata Hari, who made play into the straight, with Rebel Star, Grand Sport, Tin Lap, Supreme- Ruler, Monanui and Alpinus in close attendance. Inside the distance Rebel Star was in front, but was immediately challenged by Monanui, who finished splendidly to win going away. Supreme Ruler ran on solidly for third and Locmbination came from a long way back to get fourth ahead of Mata Hari, Gold Pocket, West Tor, Alpinus and Conference. Monanui revelled in the going, which did not assist Rebel Star with his big weight. West Tor was closer at the finish than at any other stage and should do better. Grand Sport had every chance, but Red Rufus was badly placed early and was never dangerous. Tudor Wins Easily.

Only five started in the Greenlane Steeplechase and the odds-dn favourite Tudor proved the good thing the betting indicated by leading throughout and winning easily from Patutahi, with Carlaris a fair, third, and Ruby Meteor fourth. Tudor is one of the most promising young steeplechasers seen out for some time and goes with great dash. He did not jump as well in the race as in his schooling, but he went better in the second round and always had the measure of Patutahi, who challenged after landing over the second to last fence.

Favourites Unplaced. The favourites, Horowhen.ua and Record Flight, were both unplaced in the second division , of the Jervois Handicap, the third fancy King Musk scoring nicely from Supreme Court, • who returned a good price for second. Versant and Supreme Court made nearly all the running and they led into the straight from Hunting Jay, Adeline, Gypsy Moth, King Musk, Leo Colossus and Black Songster. Supreme Court looked like winning inside the dktance but King Musk finkhed strongly to beat him by three parts of a length. Hunting Jay was two lengths away and Versant was fourth, followed by Horowhenua, Black Songster, Adeline, Hawthorn and Record Flight. The winner has been very consistent and thoroughly deserved hk success. Supreme Court and Hunting Jay displayed brilliant speed from outside post positions and they also ran on fairly solidly at the end. Versant failed only in the last half furlong and should be much better for the race. Horowhenua was going strongly at the end after being badly placed and Record Flight, who was cut back on the raik early, was also running on. Scarlet Rambler and Sea Fox did not begin well and were never sighted. Wonderful Hurdles Contest.

The Penrose Hurdles provided one of the finest hack hurdles contests seen at Ellerslie for a long time and no fewer than six of the runners had winning chances less than 100 yards from the post. Victory went to Stanchion, who got a run through on the rails in the race from the last fence to just beat Jayson. Delrain was right up third and Spalpiko fourth. Closely following were Valpeen and Count Lendroff. Stanchion was fortunate to get such a fine run through on the raik. He may not have won without it, but hk form showed definite improvement and now that he is gaining confidence with his jumping he may soon score again. Jayson and Delrain did not jump too well, especially Delrain, whose performance was good considering that he lost several lengths at at least three fences. Count Lendroff had every chance and. just failed at the end. Spalpiko and Valpeen went good races for steeplechasers and they will be more at home over the country. Great Northern Hurdles.

The Great Northern Hurdles was robbed of considerable interest owing to a chapter of accidents, eight of the 16 runners failing to complete the course. The mishaps commenced early, when Diversion fell at the first fence and brought down Pahu, who was a good second favourite to Emancipation. Mia Stella fell at the second fence and Prince of Orange followed suit at the fourth, also bringing down Cargen and Catoma, Then Callamart fell when moving up seven furlongs from home, and Gold Knight also toppled over when going nicely in second position at ths fence by the five furlongs post. Gold Knight, Thespis and Prince of Orange were the pacemakers and with seven furlongs to go Thespis led by a length from Gold Knight, with Wee Pat, Billy Boy, Hounslow, Callamart, Emancipation and Make Up following. Wee Pat ran to the lead half a mile from home and turned into the- straight four lengths clear of Make Up, who had run up smartly, with Billy Boy, Emancipation and Hounslow next. Wee Pat landed over the last fence just clear and withstood a determined challenge from Make Up to win by a length. Emancipation, who hit the last fence hard, was five lengths away third, and Billy Boy was a good fourth. Biform, who pulled up lame, was fifth, with Lucess, Hounslow and Thespis some lengths away. Wee Pat was always well placed and gave a fine display of fencing. She is only a handful and is a thorough stayer. Make Up, after being last a mile from home, .made a great effort to win and battled on like a real racehorse. Emancipation hit several fences hard. Billy Boy shaped well and is now likely to come into more favour for the Great Northern Steeplechase. Gold Knight was going really well when he fell and Callamart was also moving up when he went out. Cornwall to View Halloo.

Splendidly handled by B. H. Morris the favourite, View Halloo, registered a fine performance to win the Cornwall Handicap from the second fancy Puss Moth. Lack and L’AUegro made the running and they were the leaders into the straight from Takakua, Puss Moth, View Halloo, Caliente and Lord Vai, who were in close order once they straightened up. L’AUegro drew out slightly, but Puss Moth, View Halloo and Lord Vai immediately challenged, View Halloo finishing best to win by three parts of a length from Puss Moth. Lord Vai was a length away third and Mungatoon was fourth. Next to finish were Prince Colossus, L’Allegro, Ornamental and Hushing. The first and second horses were always handily.

placed and View Halloo finished just too well for Puss Moth. Lord Vai ran his best race for some tune and Mungatoon came home strongly on the outside after being a good way back at the turn. L’Allegro was made a lot of use of and failed only in the last half furlong. Takakua went well to the turn and then retired. Prince Colossus was staying on at the end after having none the best of luck in the running. Silent Bill’s Easy Race.

Silent Bill was an odds-on favourite for the Hunt Club Hurdles and duly scored, having an easy race at the finish, as the result of his most formidable opponents falling at the second to last fence. Silent Bill was going easy in front with Cordon at this stage, with Mangu King and Haakon just behind them. Cordon and . Mangu King fell and Haakon went down over them. Silent Bill thenehad the race in hand and won by 25 lengths from Ardmanning, who paid double figures for second. Master Albyn was third and Royal England a long way back. Silent Bill was always going well in front, but Haakon may have been extremely difficult to beat as he .was going strongly. Last Event to Greek Gold. Imamint was favourite for the Members’ .Handicap, but after showing plenty of brilliancy to reach the front early from No. 15 she failed near the end and finished fourth. Imamint. led into the straight from Solomon, King Ford, Tradesman, Greek. Gold, Copyist and Curie. Greek Gold reached the lead inside the distance and stalled off a determined challenge from Curie to win by half a length. Tradesman, who drew the extreme outside at the barrier, and was on the outside most of the way, was a close third, followed by Imamint, Solomon, Silver Streak, Golden Chant and Copyist. Greek Gold was always handy and ran on gamely at the end, although Curie, who drew No. 14, was going the better at the end. Tradesman showed signs of regaining form and his turn should not be far away. Silver Streak was closer at the finish than any other stage, but Gay Sheila was never dangerous. SECOND DAY AT AUCKLAND.
