INGLEWOOD SCHOOL

CHAIRMAN’S ANNUAL REPORT. The report to be submitted by the act-ing-chairman of the Inglewood school committee, Mr. S. Wanklyn, at the annual meeting of householders states that the question of finance was one of difficulty, but the year has been of a satisfactory nature. “The general account shows a debit balance of £B9 11s Bd. This in effect means that the State supplied us with that amount less than was required for school costs,” the report comments. The special account is in credit £94 0s 6d, represented by funds raised locally for school purposes. Owing. to the state of the school building costs are fairly heavy, but these have constant attention. Cost of fuel in an endeavour to allow the children to work in comfort during the winter is a heavy item. Better access to the dental clinic has been effected by erecting a gate on the corner of the grounds. The grounds have been kept in as good order as possible. That the grounds and buildings are unsuitable for school purposes there is no doubt. A deputation waited on the Hon. R. Master, Minister of Education, and was assured that Inglewood would receive the first grant out of funds allotted to Taranaki for the purpose of a new school. A deputation of representatives of Inglewood and surrounding country schools waited on the Minister soliciting his help for better train facilities for the children attending Stratford Technical High School. The Minister stated he would endeavour to do all in his power to help. A recommendation by the householders last year was given effect to and a combined schools’ sports meeting was held in April in conjunction with the Inglewood Athletic Club. Keen interest was displayed by the children and it is hoped the sports will become an annual fixture. In the boys’ championship, Inglewood was second, winning the girls’ championship. Steady improvement work has been carried on with the new school grounds, fencing and tree planting receiving attention, a considerable number of unemployed having been engaged. The annual children’s ball and concert were successes. The ball returned a profit of £5 7s Id and the concert £2O 8s 2d. The jubilee of the school takes place this year. ' ' PERSONAL ITEMS. A vote of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. J. O’Neill, Pukengahu, a vice-president of the Stratford Cycle Club, was passed at the annual meeting of the club.
