SAFETY IN FLYING
CHRISTIE CUP COMPETITION. MR. E. J. STRACHAN WINNER. Wanganui, April 21. Thirteen pilots of the Western Federated Flying Club competed for the Christie Cup to-day, a trophy donated by Dr. Kenrick Christie to encourage pilots to take every possible precaution when flying and so obviate risk of accident. Mr. E. J. Strachan, of Wanganui, won the event. Pilots had to fly over a set course and set a compass to a true wind direction. At a given signal a forced landing had to be made over a fence. Great interest was aroused in this competition, and it is stated that the trophy will achieve a great deal in the interests of aviation. A temporary toi-toi fence was erected on the aerodrome and permitted the rules to be strictly observed. Captain S. Gibbons and Flying-Officer lan Keith were the judges. Mr. Strachan also won the President’s Cup for the most efficient Wanganui pilot. Mr. Cyril Plumtree, New Plymouth, won the Franklin Cup for landing and Mr. J. R. Franklin won the club’s cup for bombing.
