GREAT FINISH IN CUP RACE

HAWKE’S BAY J.C. MEETING AESCULUS LAST HALF-MILE AWAY CULLUS WINS HAVELOCK FLYING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hastings, March 31. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s meeting was held to-day in dull and showery weather. The track was in good order and the attendance satisfactory. Results:—

The totallsator handled £6345 10s, compared with £7014 on the same day last year, a decrease of £668 10s. RIVERSLEA HURDLES HANDICAP. Of £7O. About one mile and a-half. 3- MILLION, 10.6 (Walsh) 1 1- COTSFIELD, 9.7 (Clements) .... 2 4- EX DONO, 9.0 (Griffiths) 3 Also started; 2-2 Kimbo 10.6, 6-6 Goshawk 10.0, 5-5 Chesham 9.0. Goshawk led early but Cotsfield and Kimbo led Million and Ex Dono over the first fence and the order was maintained right round till Kimbo fell at the last fence. Million beat Cotsfield by three lengths with the third horse the same distance away. Time, 2m 445. POUKAWA MAIDEN. Of £6O. Five furlongs and a-half. 2- ROYAL RECORD, 8.7 (Marsh) . 1 5- DE TROP, 8.7 (Leach) 2 3- SEATTLE, 8.7 (Hurne) 3 Also started: 9.8 Marsong, 12-12 Market Inn, 8-7 Dusky Crown, 11-10 Bold Bill, 7-10 Padishah, 11-9 Tahiti, 4-3 Marae Quex, 1-1 McHeath, 13-13 Life Saver, 5-5 Celerrimus all 8.0. Celerrimus was left. Marae Quex was; the first away but was soon headed by De Trop and Seattle. At the home turn Royal Record hal a run Up to the leader and in a good finish won by a length. Seattle was another length back and Marae, Quex was fourth. Time, Im 9 3-s*. x NURSERY HANDICAP. . . Of £7O. Peggy’s Joy led to the straight, when the winner came on the outside to win well by three lengths, with two lengths between second and third. Time, Im 9 2-

Slippery turned the wrong way when the barrier rose and after running 100 yards pulled up. Blue Boy was first out but past the Stands High Grader headed Stitch, Cuticle, Gainsfid and Blue Boy. Half a mile from home Aesculus was last. A furlong from home the winner started to put in a claim and won in a great finish by the narrowest margin. Gainsfid Was close up and High Grader was fourth. Time, 2m 7 l-ss. HERETAUNGA HACK HANDICAP. Of £7O. From a straggling start Fortene, Royal Shift and Conference led but Royal Shift hung on better to beat Conference by a neck. Tres Sec was three lengths back. Time, Im 40 2-ss.

AUTUMN HANDICAP. Of £7O. Six furlongs. 6-2—HYBISCUS, 7.2 (McNaughton) . 1 2- HUNTING JAY, 9.2 (Smith) .... 2 1-1-LAVINA, 8.7 (Walsh) 3 Also started: 4-6 Grumpy 8.10, 3-4 Cawbeen 8.2, 5-5 Good Cheer 7.9. When they settled down Hybiscus led Lavina, Cawbeen and Hunting Jay. There was some unintentional interference by the winner with Lavina and Hunting Jay in the run home. Won by a neck with two lengths between second and third. Time, Im 14 3-ss. HAVELOCK FLYING HANDICAP. Of £lOO. Six furlongs. 1-I—CULLUS, 7.11 (Gunn) 1 3- SLIPPERY, 9.0 (Walsh) 2 4- APRIL FOOL, 7.2 (McNaughton) 3 The field got away in a perfect line. April Fool was first to show out and was soon headed by Cullus, who made a big gap and won by four lengths. The third horse was two lengths back. Time, Im 13 2-ss.
