THREE TARANAKI WINNERS

FEILDING’S OPENING DAY FIVE FAVOURITES SUCCESSFUL. INVICTUS HURDLES WINNER. (By Wire—Special to News.) Feilding, Last Night. Feilding experienced a very successful opening day. Taranaki stables secured three wins besides minor placings. The Only untoward incident during the day occurred in the Ongo Handicap, when the tapes did not rise correctly and the field left the mark in two separate bunches. In this race also Metry Way fell, but her rider, Goldfinch, was unhurt. Bettors had a good day, five favourites winning. In the last race the three place-getters were all Owned by members of the Duncan family. From a straggling start in the Hurdles Invictus made the pace from Manawatu and Tunbridge. Royston made a fast run in the straight to go from last to first and led at the fence turning out of the straight from Silent Bill, Manawatu and Invictus. Invictus again went to the front half a mile from home and continued to win by a length from Pahu, with Manuiri a close third and Silent Bill fourth. Chief Line was next. Invictus won well after being handily placed all the way. Pahu was having her first start for a long time and will be improved by the race. Royston stopped very quickly. The favourite,. Manuiri, had every chance. Chief .Line tan a fair race for a first attempt over hurdles.

Race Spoiled by Start. In a very poor start in the Ongo Handicap Merry Way, Boudoir, Jayson, Arctic Region and Sunny Downs were badly left. Arena and Ingenuity were first to show out from Moatoa and Chief Marionette. The order remained the same for three furlongs except that Ingenuity dropped back. After turning into the straight the leaders bundled and in a tight finish Moatoa won by a head from Land Tax, with the deadheaters, Gay Court and Arena, a head away, and Boon, Chief Marionette and Boudoir following almost in line. Moatoa finished more strongly than usual. Gay Court ran a fine race considering it was his first start for several months. The favourite Sunny Downs was hope-r lessly left. Merry Way fell just before the straight entrance was reached. Grand Jury by a Head. ' Tiger Gain was a length clear of Copper King, with Grand Jury a similar distance behind for the first half-mile of the Manchester Handicap. Copper King was alongside Tiger Gain down the back stretch and actually headed Tiger Gain into the straight with Grand Jury two lengths away. Grand Jury put in a strong run and in a Close finish won by a neck, with Copper King only a head in front of Tiger Gain. There was very little between the trio. Morris’ extra vigour on Grand Jury landed him a winner.

Matorni Comfortable Winner. Dawn Princess was first to break the line in the Maiden and l was the early leader from Heat, Wharaurangi and Headland. Turning Into the straight Matorni ran up to take the lead from Hest, with Wharaurangi and Lapel handy, Matorni went oil to Wirt Well from Waipiro, who was well clear of Lapel. Hest was fourth, followed by Indefinite, Bold Jim, Wharaurangi and High Exchange. Matorni won fairly comfortably at the close. He was a hot favourite. Waipiro hung on better than usual. Lapel is likely to improve, as are Dawn Princess and Bold Jim. Royal Hunting Smart. Good Hunting and Royal Hunting were first to break the line in the Mangadne Handicap, but Souchong soon assumed command from Royal Hunting, Lack and Good Hunting. Souchong Opened a break of three lengths, with the field Well strung out after three furlongs had been covered. Entering the straight Souchong was still dear, but Royal Hunting finished well to win by a length from Good Hunting, with Souchong a close third. Lack was fourth and Diagano, Porotiti and Princess Doreen in that order. Royal Hunting was always handily placed. He is a smart performer. Souchong stopped quickly in the straight. Lack ran Wide in the straight. Diagano never looked likely. Silver Wings Outclasses Field, Bodyline left the mark smartest in the Taonui Handicap, but Silver Wings ran to the front quickly from the outside and after two furlongs was followed by Whyte Melville and Bodyline. The order was unchanged until the straight was reached, where Bodyline ran up to Silver Wings. However, the latter came away again to win comfortably by two lengths, Bodyline hanging on to just hold off Rollovant, with Aussie Ra fourth and Palm and Windscreen next. Silver Wings won impretsively, outclassing the opposition. Bodyline ran a fair race. Rollovant finished strongly. Whyte Melville stopped quickly during the latter stages. The favourite*; Palm, made a “dab” a furlong from home, but could not go on with it.

Pango by Two Lengths. Ythan was the early leader from Pango, Colossical, Red Rufus and Walton Park in the Onepuhi Handicap. Positions were unchanged down the back stretch, except that Red Rufus dropped back slightly. Pango and Colossical led into the straight with Walton Park and Ythan handy. Pango finished solidly to win by two lengths from Colossical. Lalla Quex came home well to cut Walton Park out of third money, with Hark Forrard next. PangO bore out the good form he showed at Awapuni and Trentham. He is an improved horse. Colossical had every chance but the winner was too good. The big weight stopped Walton Park. Hark Forrard put in a good run in the straight after being tailed off earlier. Farmer Scores Easily. When the field settled down Ida Merling was in front from Farmer, Emotion and Senegal. Half a mile from home Ida Merling led Farmer, Sanguine King and Aiguille. At the straight entrance Ida Merling was still in front, but Farmer soon had her measure. Senegal came from the rear division to be third, with Emotion fourth and Sanguine King and Aiguille next. Farmer was always going like a winner and had something in hand at the close. Ida Merling ran an honest race. Senegal put in a great run over the final stages.
