The proprietors of Sargent’s, Ltd., Jewellers, High Street, Hawera, in thanking the public of Hawera and district for its support for the past 40 years, announced that the business will be carried on as usual.

A welcome home will be given to Mr. and Mrs. Eric Griffin in the Tokaora hall to-night.' Particulars are advertised. Retail shops at Hawera will be closed on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Monday, but will remain open all day to-morrow. The late night will be observed on Thursday.

EVENING ATHLETICS AT PATEA, SEASON DRAWING TO ITS CLOSE. The Patea Amateur Athletic Clubs’ season of evening programmes was carried into its closing stage last night, tire final programme being scheduled for Wednesday night.-The events were keenly contested, the poor interest shown by senior cyclists resulting in the non-in-clusion of that event. MOKOIA FAMILY FAKEWELLED. DEPARTURE OF MR. SMEATON. '. ' f" . " - A farewell social and dance was tendered to Mr. and Mrs. I. G. Smeaton and family at Mokoia on Friday night, when friends from Meremere, Ohangai, Whakamara, Manutahi and Whareroa were present. The popularity of the guests was shown by a large attendance.Items were rendered as follows:—Pianoforte duet, . Misses J. Lander and M. Bell; elocutionary items, Misses Smith and M. Cleaver; song, Miss E. Harvie; step dance, Mr. Cassidy; recitation, Master L. Marsh. Community singing was led by Messrs. I. Smeaton and T. Percy, with Mr. D. ,S. Richardson at the piano. Music for dancing was supplied by Mr.-Ray Wills, arid’extras were' played by -Misses J. Lander and-M; Bell and Mr. D. S. Richardson. Messrs. S, J. Sidswell and R. Church were masters of ceremony, and supper was supplied by the ladies. ■The - chairman .of- the evening, Mr. .W. J. Marsh, before making »a presentation, called - on several speakers representing various districts. Mr. S. J. Tidswell, Mokoia, expressed the regret of the residents at losing a popular family. Mr. Smeaton was one of the most capable and obliging men ever stationed at Mokoia. In local affairs both Mr. and Mrs. Smeaton always helped every good cause. Mr. Smeaton was an active . member on various committees, being secretary for the Settlers’ Association and:school committee for a number of years.. Mrs. Smeaton was an active member- of the W.D.F.U. since its inception-in: the district.; Mr. G, W.-Williams, speaking on behalf of Meremere and Ohangai • residents, spoke highly of Mr. Smeaton. They regretted very much his transfer. Mr. Christie,’ Whakamara, -endorsed the

previous 'speakers’- remarks. Mr. Marsh presented Mr. and Mrs. Smeaton with a ■ purse on behalf of the ‘residents. Mr. Marsh as . chairman of the school committee referred to the l long service rendered by Mr. Smeaton. Mr. Smeaton thanked the speakers for their remarks and the residents for their presentation.
