DEATH OF MR. A. DAVIES

SERVICE IN PUBLIC WORKS. STRATFORD BOWLER AND MASON. Mr. Alfred Davies died at his residence, Hamlet Street, Stratford, yesterday afternoon after an illness which has confined him to his home during the past few weeks. Mr. Davies was in his 70th year and had been living in retirement from his position of inspector of works in the Public Works Department for only four years. He was highly esteemed by all with whom he came in contact and both in his professional capacity and in his private life numbered a wide circle of close friends. He was a prominent member of the Masonic order and maintained a close connection with the Stratford Bowling Club. Mr. Davies was bom on April 6, 1865, and joined the Public Works Department at Nelson when he was 37 years of age. He was transferred to Stratford on June 1, 1908, and during his 22 years of service in the Taranaki district has had the supervision of several large works, notably the Stratford post office. He retired on July 31, 1930. Mr. Davies leaves a widow and four sons, Messrs. Ncden, Clifford and Harry Davies, Wellington and. Mr. N. Davies, Stratford. TENNIS MATCH AT OHURA. DEFEAT OF PIO PIO TEAM. The Pio Pio Tennis Club visited Ohura during the week-end to play a friendly game with the Ohura Tennis Club. A general meeting of the Radnor Road Tennis Club was held on Thursday night T to discuss ways and means of raising money to make another hard court beside the present one. The secretary was instructed to secure an estimate of the cost, the members to do the earthwork. It was decided to commence work at once to raise funds.

Mapp. Mrs. Hunt was hostess at a party for a large number of children on Saturday. AN OUTLAW IN LIQUOR. BREACH OF PROHIBITION ORDER. Described by Sergeant Henry as “an outlaw as far as liquor is concerned,” Arthur Francis Fredericks was fined £2 and costs at the Eltham Police Court yesterday for entering licensed premises at Eltham on February 28 during the currency of a prohibition order against him. On a further charge of obtaining liquor while prohibited Fredericks was convicted and discharged. Leslie Rountree, barman at the Coronation Hotel, stated that on February 28 Fredericks came in and asked for a “handle” of beer. This he supplied to him, having then received no notification that he was prohibited. Sergeant Henry said Fredericks had a bad record as far as liquor was concerned and on the day in question he should have appeared at the Hawera Court for breaches of his prohibition order.
