CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

TOWN INSURANCE CLASSIFICATION.

DECISION TO AFFILIATE. Various matters connected with the progress of Stratford were considered at last night’s meeting of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce. Those present were Messrs. W. Hoskin (chairman), F. T. Hale, S. D. Hayton, E. P. Pridham, D. McCready, C. R. Hart, J. C. Allen, C. Fisher and W. Power (secretary). The council of the Fire and Accident Underwriters’ Association, in replying to the chamber’s letter regarding the insurance classification of Stratford, advised that representatives of the chamber would visit Stratford on March 9 and call on the secretary of the chamber and others concerned. The matter of footpath lighting arose from the minutes, and it was stated the borough council was believed to be making experiments. It was decided to write to the council and ask what progress had been made. The Whangarei chamber wrote that it found the new capitation fees to the Associated Chambers of 3s 9d per member too high in comparison with the finances of the chamber. Last year Whangarei had found the fee of 2s 6d quite high enough and had to strain its resources considerably in an endeavour to pay a portion of the extra levy made. The Associated Chambers had therefore been advised that unless revision could be made Whangarei would have no option but to withdraw from membership. Stratford’s views on the matter were asked for. The question was considered from the Stratford chamber’s point of view. The sub-committee set up to report on the matter of incorporation and affiliation recommended the step being taken. Mr. Power thought the finances would not stand the strain, but it was decided that if the move was not made interest would disappear and the sub-committee’s recommendations were adopted. “We must see how the subscriptions come in before we proceed with the resolution,” said Mr. Power. It was decided that members of the executive make a canvass for subscriptions in order that the chamber’s funds would be in a position by the end of March to carry out its decision. The Whangarei chamber will be advised of the Stratford decision and of Stratford’s opinion that the charge of 3s 9d is heavy. The Minister of Transport acknowledged receipt of the chamber’s resolution in respect of heavy traffic fees on farmers’ trucks and advised that he was arranging for the question to be examined by the Transport Co-ordina-tion Board. FUNDS FOR SCHOOL GROUND. MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. Various schemes that might produce sums to swell the fund for improving the grounds at the Stratford primary school ’were reviewed on Monday at a meeting of the improvement committee. Mr. S. Pitt presided in place of the chairman (Mr. W. Hoskin), who apologised for absence. Mr. Pitt reported that the collector had secured promises for £2O and anticipated that he could obtain another £lO. The proposal was to keep the subscription list open till the committee thought advisable to close it. The shop day would take place on March 24. What other avenues that might be explored besides the direct appeal and the shop day were matters for considera-

The headmaster, Mr. L. J. Furrie, said that the staff had a school concert in contemplation for production in April and suggested that such a concert should produce about £2O. “Before we rush into the question of a ball it would be advisable to elect a sub-committee which could make inquiries regarding the help we would be likely to receive,” Mr. Pitt said in reply to the secretary (Mr. J. Morrison), who outlined a number of points that had to be considered before a ball could be arranged. The secretary was instructed to report to the next meeting on the likelihood of support for a ball being given by bodies other than the Stratford Swimming Club, Which had already offered assistance. It was resolved to issue 6d tickets for adults to admit them to either or both the school swimming sports on March 15 and the athletic sports on March 22. CRICKETING AT OHURA. VISIT OF PIO PIO TEAM. APPRECIATION OF RECIPIENT.

“I wish to express the great pleasure I enjoy in having such a treasure as the album presented-to me by the Stratford Chamber of Commerce,” wrote the past president of the chamber, Mr. J. B. Richards, to the meeting of the council last night. The album was given to Mr. Richards in recognition of his retirement from the presidency after 24 years. The inspiration, the thought and the care necessary to produce such a work, he added, were greatly appreciated by him. He was proud to have it, and he felt grateful for the trouble that was taken in its preparation. Mr. Hoskin paid a tribute to the help given by the Press in the reports of the presentation and the review of chamber activities produced in connection with it.
