PLATES TRANSFERRED TO TRUCK.

ELTHAM RESIDENTS CONVICTED.

Charged with using an unregistered motor vehicle in Railway Street, Eltham, and with affixing to a motor truck a number plate not being an appropriate driving number issued under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, John Hancox (Mr. A. Chrystal) pleaded guilty at the Eltham Police Court yesterday. At a previous hearing Hancox pleaded not guilty, as did William Uncles, who was charged with aiding and abetting the commission of the lastmentioned offence. Mr. Chrystal intimated that both men had agreed to plead guilty. Sergeant Henry said information was received by an anoymous letter. The date of the offence had been disputed and the case had been adjourned to enable inquiries to be made. A charge against Hancox of driving without a license had been withdrawn.

Mr. Chrystal said the offence was now admitted and he appealed for leniency. “More foolish than criminal,” said the magistrate in imposing a fine of 10s and costs 10s on Hancox on the charge of affixing the plates. On the charge of using an unregistered vehicle he was convicted and discharged. Uncles was fined 10s and costs on a charge of aiding and abetting the affixing of the number. GENERAL ITEMS. Birds of a Feather. When afternoon tea matters were being discussed at Monday night’s annual meeting of the Stratford Golf Club one member suggested that scorers of “eagles” and “birdies” be’ fined small amounts for the tea fund. The chairman, Mr. R. B. Anderson, related that the other day he had asked a member how many such successful holes he had had. “Well, I haven’t had many eagles or birdies yet,” was ‘ the reply, “but I hope to get a swallow at the nineteenth.” Work on Raekohura Road. The Stratford Chamber of Commerce last night received a letter from the Stratford Hospital Board asking support for a further move to have Raekohua Road between Tahora and Tangarakau metalled. The chamber, in view of recent Press reports regarding the possibility of a camp being established and moves by residents, decided to wait till further definite information was received on the matter.

Eltham Court Judgments. Judgment by default was given by Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., in the Eltham Court yesterday on the following claims: Alfred Ware v. George Norris, £3 3s 5d (costs £1 9s 6d); J. Taylor and Co. Ltd. v. A. Eketone, £B6 14s 9d (£5 12s 6d); same v. F. R. Fulton, £4B 18s lid (£4 3s 6d); same v. G. H. Monk, £2 10s (£1 4s 6d); same v. T. Hedley, £4 4s (£1 5s 6d); same v. G. E. Strother, £2O 17s Id (£4 3s 6d); H. L. Kasper v. Mrs. Annie Hopkins, £2 13s 6d (£1 5s 6d).

Finger Injured in Car Door. Max Rowland, son of Mr. W. E. Rowland, Hunter Road, had his finger jammed in the door of a motor-car and is receiving medical treatment in hospital

Injury to Eye Suffered. .. While working a drill at his father’s coach building works a young man, G. H. Richards, received a fragment of steel in the eye. He was taken to Wanganui for treatment by a'specialist and was later taken to Wellington for an operation. It is believed the sight of the eye may be destroyed. Eltham Tennis Team.

The Eltham Tennis Club’s team to play Hawera Park at Eltham on Saturday will be J. Stewart, McGregor, E. Townsend, A. L. Picard, Hill, R. Lee, Mesdames Adams, Lee, Knuckey, Misses P. Fountaine, Welch and H. Wilson. On Saturday week a match will be played against Waverley, at Waverley. In the second round of the Eltham Tennis Club’s singles championship B. Clifford-Jones beat A. L. Picard 6—l, 6—2. Death of Eltham Pioneer. The death occurred yesterday at Eltham of Mrs. Elizabeth Pollard, who arrived in a sailing ship in 1876 and took up residence at Patea. With her husband she removed to Normanby, and after living there for 15 years went to Eltham 38 years ago. Mrs. Pollard was a supporter of various activities. She was 79 years of age and is survived by four daughters and three sons—Mrs. J. Moore, Kapuni, Mrs. J. Jacobson, Tututawa, Mrs. L. Rye, Hawera, Mrs. H. E. Williams, Eltham, Messrs. W. J. Pollard, Eltham, H. Pollard, Rahotu, F. Pollard, Stratford. Two brothers, Messrs. Norman and George Pollard, predeceased her. There are twenty-nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Collision at Te Roti. A collision occurred on Boylan Road, Te Roti, about 2 o’clock yesterday morning between a sedan car driven by Mr. H. L. Laurent, Hawera, and a light motor-truck driven by Mr. G. Rawcliffe, New Plymouth. Slight damage was done to both vehicles. Harvest Thanksgiving. The Eltham Salvation Army held harvest thanksgiving services on Sunday, when produce and fruit decorated the citadel. Suitable music was played by the band and a special harvest thanksgiving song was sung. Addresses appropriate to the occasion were given. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. The official opening of the Eltham Golf Club will be held to-morrow afternoon, when mixed foursomes will be played. An invitation is extpnded to members of other cubs. The greens having been kept well cut all through the summer for summer play are in excellent order and never before have the winter players opened the season under such favourable conditions.
