MATAPU DEFEATS KAPONGA. Another Egmont Tennis Association match was played at Matapu on Saturday against Kaponga. Tito result was a win for Matapu by 14 sets (117 games) to 10 sets (86 games). Details of the play are, Matapu players being mentioned first: —

Ohangai Euchre and Dance. The first gathering to be held in Ohangai in. connection with the Hawera queen carnival took place on Friday night, when a euchre party and dance organised by W.D.F.U. members in aid of the country candidate was held. The euchre and dance attracted a large number of local residents. The prize-win-ners were: Ladies’ first prize, Miss F. Elmes, after a play-off with Miss L. Elmes, who secured second prize; men, Mr. S. Pirn 1, Mr. M. Kitney 2. Supper was served by the ladies and dancing was enjoyed to music by -Messrs. S. and W. Geary and J. Bloor (Meremere) and S. and G. Kerrisk. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Webb and Mr. M. Kitney. Mr. G. Cunningham was master of ceremonies. Old Boys v. The Rest The Hawera Old Boys cricket team will play an eleven chosen from the other South Taranaki A grade teams on Saturday. The Rest will be represented by S. and V. Betts, W. Dormer, Reg. Sunday Concert at Hawera. There was a capacity audience at the Hawera Opera House on Sunday evening, when an after-church concert was held in aid of the Movie Queen’s candidature in the Hawera relief carnival. The Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister of Lands, will arrive at Hawera on Friday in the course of his official visit to Taranaki. He vail leave for Wellington next morning. SCHOOL TEACHERS STUDY. REFRESHER COURSE AT HAWERA. School teachers attended a refresher course at the Hawera Main school yesterday and the course will be continued to-day. There was an attendance of 76, including secondary school teachers from Hawera and Manaia. The lecturers are Messrs. R. Donn, art, and K. C. Reid, physical education, both of whom were associated with the Auckland Training College. Mr. Donn in his lectures urged the greater use of colour in lessons. He stressed the desirability of getting more of the individual point of view into children’s work even if the drawing was not so finished. Mr. Reid stressed the importance of correct posture as a basis for correct physical training. He pointed out the importance of a straight spine. The lectures will be followed by visits to the larger schools, where the application of the theoretical work will be assisted. PATEA RANGE SHOOTING. DEFENCE CLUB TROPHY. A competition for the club’s trophy was fired on the Patea range at 300 yards by Defence Club members on Saturday. Conditions were unfavourable for high scoring, but despite the tricky wind some creditable scores were made. Rifleman N. Coad topped the score with 45. Several members have yet to fire before the final figures are available. The
